-- makes it a little difficult to resist building some kind of spaceship/rake that pulls this impressively improbable thing along behind it.

Calcyman has pointed out that one obvious candidate for such a spaceship would be an Orthogonoid -- specifically an Orthogonoid with odd horizontal symmetry, which requires a slightly different design than most of the completed Orthogonoids currently on the market. One reasonably good candidate would be Orthogonoid496, possibly modified by adding a couple of Snarks (but maybe not; see next post).

Orthogonoid496 moves upward 208+2N cells per cycle, so we'd need the Orthogonoid to produce at least 208/16 = 13 extra gliders from each side, more or less equally spaced so that one will arrive at the constellation on the correct lane from each side in turn. In fact we might as well get the timing perfect, so that the period of the back end is a fraction (1/13th or whatever) of the period of the Orthogonoid.

The two extra Snarks add some significant population and construction cost, so really this is now Orthogonoid594. But now the single-channel construction arm stream is far enough away from the child constructor/reflector that slsparse can make a recipe for it, without the construction arm running into the MWSS-to-G -- or the arm's reaction envelope running into other catalysts in the southeast part of the child mechanism.

There's still a little bit of a problem, though: the parent construction arm can't conveniently build the SW corner of the child constructor/reflector, because the parent constructor arm doesn't extend far enough southwest. Some of the parent's circuitry gets in the way of firing slow-salvo gliders NW to build those still lifes:

There's an easy solution, which is to build the southwest corner of the grandchild constructor/reflector at the same time as the circuitry for the child (minus that same southwest corner, which will already have been constructed).

There are some other options which may be better, which I'll put in the next post. But this design certainly seems as if it would be workable.

Orthogonoid496 was designed before Snarks became relatively easy for slsparse to compile automatically. Now it might be simpler all around to build a new odd-glide-symmetry mechanism, based let's say on Orthogonoid325. Here's a workable Orthogonoid393, for example:

This is somewhere near the minimum adjustment, 192 cells vertically from input to output. That's wrong because the offset shouldn't be a multiple of sixteen. (If it is, then' the left-side gliders won't be able to hit the trailing glide-reflecting constellation, since that moves 8 cells per half-cycle.)

Anyway, if we widen that gap a little, it becomes both cheaper to build and much less complicated, because the whole child reflector/constructor is accessible by the parent construction arm, instead of having to build pieces of child and grandchild mechanisms on each construction cycle.

The same trick would work with Orthogonoid496, of course. The only downside is that more extra gliders have to be added to the basic Orthogonoid recipe. Will get to some details on that in the next message. 13 additional gliders is the theoretical minimum, but it won't make much difference if we have to add 15 gliders or more to pull the Glide-Reflect Constellation upward by a full cycle.

I think slsparse should be able to compile this pretty easily without getting into trouble with the construction-arm recipes hitting anything.

We're not quite ready to get slsparse running yet, though because it would be good to decide on a self-destruct mechanism for the Orthogonoid first. Probably it would be best to run simeks' GoL-destroy on this structure, and arrange it so that a single southward *WSS from an active construction arm can clean up its entire parent circuitry completely. Anyone want to give that search a try?

Okay, about getting the extra gliders aimed at the Glide-Reflect Constellation:

This should be a fairly easy DNA-splicing job. First we have to invent a standard single-channel recipe that shoots a slow salvo at a slow^2 elbow (180 degrees from where the Orthogonoid construction gliders go). This salvo should produce a 90-degree glider with the right color relative to the single-channel stream, and move the elbow to (0,-16) from its previous location -- in Golly coordinates, assuming the Orthogonoid is moving up as usual.

Then
  • find 17 (or whatever odd number is needed, based on the Orthogonoid's offset) equally spaced locations in the compiled Orthogonoid recipe where arbitrary delays can be added*;
  • add a more-than-adequate amount of blank space to the tape in each location;
  • drop in The Slow^2 Recipe at each location;
  • calculate how far away the elbow is from where it needs to be at that particular point;
  • add {+N} and {-N} elbow-move operations as a prefix and suffix to The Slow^2 Recipe.
If you care about precision, advance or delay the whole prefix+Recipe+suffix DNA segment inside the empty space, until the timing is exactly right. That seems like the easy part.

The whole thing shouldn't be too difficult, and if the process is documented it will make a great tutorial to show how simple single-channel DNA splicing is (once slsparse is available).

* Basically, just string the whole recipe out in a line, feed it into an Orthogonoid393 with the output suppressed (to make HashLife happier), add the 17 evenly spaced large gaps, and run each new sub-recipe through the constructor and make sure it still works.

If a segment ends up pi-exploding the elbow, move a single glider either leftward or rightward by whatever standard gap distance you've chosen. Because simeks' recipes all consist of singleton gliders and glider pairs, moving one glider should always be enough to fix any problems.

I just re-read the slsparse tutorial on the LifeWiki. It's probably way more confusing than it needs to be, because it involves manually stitching together a lot of pieces of a fairly complicated project. There are some new features of slsparse that mean that half of that stuff doesn't usually have to be done any more.

Anyway, this custom-Orthogonoid project should be much simpler. It would be great to put together a simpler clearer slsparse tutorial based on this project.

If anyone tries to put together a piece of the custom Orthogonoid and has trouble, please post the details here. I've probably forgotten half of the mysterious problems that I used to have with slsparse. Explanations of problems like that tend to be the most useful things to include in a tutorial.

If you're running GoL-destroy on anything bigger than that, it seems like you must be trying to destroy multiple copies of the constructor/reflector. You'll only want to knock out one copy at a time, and use the same self-destruct mechanism every time.

Also, it's worth thinking about where the self-destruct signal can most conveniently come from. We'll have a slow^2 elbow available, probably somewhere off to the side where it can fire the 17 equally spaced gliders past the edge of the old dead constructor/reflector, just south of the active one. So maybe we might as well just use the same elbow to fire the self-destruct glider, putting the elbow back in the same location afterwards.

Or modify the last of the 17 glider-making salvos to leave an extra one-time turner behind... or design the standard recipe so that it always makes a boat in the right place, and just shoot that boat down the other sixteen times. Lots of options.

Anyway, with that design the trigger glider will be coming from above and outside -- from the northeast, if we're looking at the right side of the Orthogonoid. One approach would be to save GoL-destroy a little bit of work and design a custom self-destruct circuit for the MWSS-to-G, something that gives you a complete cleanup plus a glider aimed toward the Snark. You can feed that glider in as input for GoL-destroy, or come up with a custom solution for the Snark as well, with a NEward output glider. The advantage would be that you could adjust the spacing of the Orthogonoid, and the same self-destruct mechanism would still work.

It should be possible to find something like this with the Seeds of Destruction Game in a few minutes. Here's my first effort. There's probably something with just one still life, but those will be a little harder to find without writing a custom search script or firing up gencols:

That happens sometimes. If it keeps happening on multiple runs, you just have to retry with slightly different input. E.g., place a likely-looking still life yourself and see if GoL-destroy avoids the dead end after that:
