Just adding a single block to your pattern to destroy the first glider from the Herschel at top-middle allows the gun to function as p1534...

... a little more experimenting and this is definitely getting too weird for me. Take your p988+N? gun and do nothing except replace the semi-snark with a tremi-snark.... it works... and what is the period? p1534 again!
Well, that almost kind of makes sense to me, I guess. Dropping that block into the base loop basically removes one of the two circulating gliders in it. These things are much less mind-bending when there's only one glider in the loop at a time.
Oh... that was dumb of me! I blame it on an optical illusion ;)

EDIT3: No, there is not one glider in the loop. If there was, the period would still be p988.

In that case, is this the same as what is happening with your 1035->1621 example? There we also have 1621-1035 = (Period of base loop). So when I saw the same numerical thing happening with the 988 gun I assumed it was the same reason.

EDIT: briefly looked at your p2228 gun... will have to try to understand later...

EDIT2: no, not neccessary... the advertised p2228 gun is in fact.... a p1534 gun! (I mean it would be if you replaced the tremi-snark with a semi-snark)

Oh, good. Was this by downloading the ZIP file from GitHub? Any difficulties to report?
There were some difficulties, particularly the "ouptut not appearing after subperiod cycle" errors; I fixed it by replacing g.exit with g.show and continue (to not save the output), but other than that it was mostly fine.
Sounds like a reasonable workaround. I'm not clear on exactly why it was necessary, though; can you dig up the particular periods where that happened for you? The usual goal is to be able to build all 1011 guns successfully, so the script stops and reports a problem as soon as it finds that a template is wrong.

However, I was able to run the current ZIP-file package against the current ceebo/glider_guns and build all 1011 guns without any such errors. Were you running against a version of ceebo/glider_guns that's different from what's currently checked in? Not that it necessarily matters much -- I'm just trying to stabilize the gun-builder project as much as possible, to encourage chris_c to use it as a way of testing new guns when they're checked in.

EDIT: Unrelated, but something that might as well be in this thread for reference: here are all the four-digit primes divided up by period mod 8.

Re: Small Four-Digit Prime Period Guns

This would have been more useful in the pre-syringe era, but in case anyone needs some ideas:

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 35, rule = LifeHistory
13.A$11.3A$10.A$10.2A4$2.A$A.A$.2A2$9.2C19.3D$10.2C19.D$10.C18.3D10$
15.2A$15.2A5$29.2A$29.2A2$20.2A.A7.D$20.A.2A6.3D$29.2D.D!
(The eater is optional, as it merely suppresses a long-distance spark.)

Unfortunately, the only compatible way to get that R in there is to use the old G2/5/6->R converter. Even then, the glider must be inserted in rather late, as it would otherwise collide with the top block in that conduit.

Puts a glider on a transparent lane and leaves a block to stop the next glider on the lane. If the block is not removed before next use, then the output lane becomes permanently transparent, and the gadget becomes a "2x pulse dividing eater".

The old gun was the following; probably it was somehow generated automatically, rather than assembled by a human? (One could simplify it almost trivially by removing unnecessary parts.)
If I remember right, calcyman imported all of the four-digit prime-period guns from googleplex's GitHub repo. The p2333 gun is in there. It comes from chris_c's universal gun-builder script, which generates a gun with a bounding box size on the order of O(log(period)), for any period 1703 or above. That script does in fact produce that gun if you feed it "2333" and take default settings otherwise.

It's definitely true that smaller guns can easily be built for every one of those universal-script-built prime periods. The idea was basically just that at least we would know that there's "no point in building anything if it's going to end up bigger than one of these".

Would it be okay if I move these two posts over to the Small Four-Digit Prime Period Guns thread? That thread was originally created to take some of the pressure off of the "Execution of Old Guns" thread, which was mostly used for periods up to 1024 (back when chris_c's repository was the main storage location for guns, and periods above 1024 weren't collected). That thread hasn't seen any use for a few years, but it still looks like a better place to find different ideas for "loop then reset" guns along the lines of the new p2333.

EDIT: Moved, based on the quotation of the question below. (The question didn't actually get answered, technically speaking -- so if I'm guessing wrong, not to worry, I can always move these back again.)

It seems that designs in this thread did not yet reach Catagolue; e.g. guntrue_1993 is larger than the p1993 gun posted on the first page.

Some solutions produced by Hersrch (especially with recent discoveries added to the database) might be competitive for periods below ~2000 or so. E.g. here is a 1879-step track found using Spartan components (ignoring welds):

It seems that designs in this thread did not yet reach Catagolue; e.g. guntrue_1993 is larger than the p1993 gun posted on the first page.
Yup -- I suspect that several hundred guns currently in the "guntrue" collection can easily be improved, with custom work for each gun, based on various hints that are hiding in this thread ... let alone new constructions based on the many discoveries since 2019.

It's a much trickier problem to write another universal generator script like chris_c's, that can automatically generate smaller guns for all of these periods. With existing methods, you kind of end up needing a new template for each small group of guns, which is almost as much manual work as just building each of the guns directly.

In the absence of a script like that, the four-digit prime periods are a large enough group that nobody has yet been interested in taking up the challenge of building each improvement manually and submitting it to Catagolue.

That thing is 1461 + 16X, so it is going to hit a few primes, though probably need a better 2b-to-g for guarantied awesomeness.

Addendum:
And actually, this thing could be combined with the other trick I posted earlier that work for larger primes, instead of having to merge back a glider into the "main track", with an output glider what went through many period multiplier *and* suppress the glider already there, now one only needs to clear either the hive or the block, so the number of "short" and "long" loops are no longer equal (and no longer a multiple of S+L). Well, I will let someone try that one out, if they dare.

Inserting a 8-lane glider shifter gives 1609 + 16k:

Re: Small Four-Digit Prime Period Guns

I just though of a simpler strategy to get prime period, but due to bad luck, it will always be an even period:

Code: Select all

x = 121, y = 93, rule = LifeHistory

The only way this still works for prime, is to put 3 gliders on the track and use tremi snarks, but wont break any record. But for period 2*p (p prime), this might beat some n<1000 guns (currently the period is 1114, but I assume it can be made smaller by getting a glider by some other means.

Well one would need to have the inner loop be slower than the outer loop, otherwise the signal on the inner loop never change phase, anyways, just felt that this could be interesting.

Well one would need to have the inner loop be slower than the outer loop, otherwise the signal on the inner loop never change phase, anyways, just felt that this could be interesting.
That looks like a variant of what I called the "2-out-of-3 mechanism" back at the beginning of this thread, updated for modern times with speed tunnels and a better way of getting a one-out-of-three signal out. Let's see, what other new technology is there that can be mixed in here?

I just though[t] of a simpler strategy to get prime period, but due to bad luck, it will always be an even period...
The only way this still works for prime, is to put 3 gliders on the track and use tremi snarks, but wont break any record. But for period 2*p (p prime), this might beat some n<1000 guns (currently the period is 1114, but I assume it can be made smaller by getting a glider by some other means.
The new 8-lane biblock shifter makes this p1118+8N instead of 1114+8N -- I didn't remember the details and was hoping the shift would produce odd numbers, but an easy +4 adjustment is nothing to sneeze at.

... I haven't actually figured out yet how three gliders in the loop and tremi-Snarks can make an odd period. Is that just for cases where the loop is adjusted to be much longer than the Jubjub-reflector section, so that there's always time for the signal to get back past the switch? I'm probably thinking about it wrong, but it seems like six gliders would be needed in the (even bigger) loop, to get to an odd period.

Well, what ever track you pick that feeds back the glider into the track, if takes K tick, the period of the gun will be 2K + (some even number) + 8N, so it will be even because the track is used twice every "period", but 1 time is slower than the other by an even number, the only way to have a odd period here would be to have a different 180 degree reflector, that slows the glider by a odd number instead.

If you put 2 glider on the track, one will always use the "fast" loop, and the other with use the slow loop. So they are very likely to collide eventually, unless you carefully pick the delays I guess. If you have 3, then every glider will alteratively use the fast and slow loop, so they all will have the same period. So if each produces a glider uppon lap competion, with a semi snark, you get to divide the period by 3. I though that with a tremi snark you could divide the period by 2 instead, but I just realized that it actually does not work because that will be always the same glider that manages to release a glider through the tremi snark, and the time between successfully exiting gliders will be uneven. If would be possible to get it to work if the 1st and 5th glider, out of a loop of 6, go unfiltered, but that's not possible to do with a tremi snark. So, well, the period will always be even with this trick.

That thing is 1461 + 16X, so it is going to hit a few primes, though probably need a better 2b-to-g for guarantied awesomeness.
1461 = 3 x 487 is not prime, but there was no guntrue_1461 on Catagolue; here is a curious comparison:
- on the left is the reduced 1461 + 16X design from above, adjusted to p1461;
- on the right is the p487 Bronco-based gun with tremi-Snark.
Although the Bronco-based gun wins (78 x 61 = 4758), the other gun is also rather small (102 x 82 = 8364).

Unlikely events happen.
My silence does not imply agreement, nor indifference. If I disagreed with something in the past, then please do not construe my silence as something that could change that.

It does suffer from the "always even" curse though, so no potential prime gun here. That being said, if there is a hershel track that has a special property that if 2 successive signal being too close (by a selected amount) can be detected and yield some glider one can catch, that could be interesting to have 2 gliders on the same track, but 1 of the 2 always takes a short-cut and catches on the other, until collision. Basically, one could make a high prime gun of the form N * N/ S + M, where N is the period of the track, and S the time saved by the shortcut (82 in the given example), and M the time to put the gliders back on track. Well, that's for 5 digits primes, so we are not there yet :P

There was no gun_2023 on Catagolue and I thought I'd submit one as a test.
143-by-84, using Kazyan's method to multiply the period of the drive gun by 17:
