Yes, although it's more commonly comes from one of these two forms:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 5, rule = B3/S23

There's even a grate in the natural evolution of the Herschel, although it soon gets disturbed.

Is it possible to clean up the debris around the still life created at gen 145 in 4 gliders?

Code: Select all

x = 54, y = 46, rule = B3/S23
9$37bo7bobo$36bo8b2o$36b3o7bo$10bobo$11b2o$11bo$22bo$21bobo$21bobo$22b

3bobo2bo$9bo!
Alternatively, if the bottom of this reaction can be synthesized in less than 9 gliders, it would be an improvement as well:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 33, rule = B3/S23
2$8b2o$8b2o13$5bobo$4bo3bo5b2o$5b3o6b2o$6bo3$5b3o$5b3o$5b2o!
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

All still-lifes with populations up to 32 bits have already been found. By repeated applications of simple converters, around 97% of the ones up to 24 bits (at least) can be synthesized, and it's likely that one wlil find similar statistics for larger ones. These numbers are increased when you add custom syntheses (e.g. of 16-18 bit still-lifes, respectively 97.5%, 96.68% and 96.74% can be synthesized incrementally this way, yet syntheses for all remaining ones have been found by hand.)

[messy paperclip synthesis]
Catagolue, or the LifeWiki will tell you you can build a paperclip with three gliders. If you don't know it's called a "paperclip", use Mark Niemiec's search page. Paste in RLE copied from Golly

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 6, rule = B3/S23

After some fruitless searches, I found this. Since the Big S can be synthesized in 3 Gs, though, I don't have high hopes.

Code: Select all

Wow. Wasn't sure we were going to see a recipe for that any time soon. Seems like if that mini-Borg SL is buildable, the next group of still lifes (the 19-bitters) doesn't stand a chance.

That doesn't say so much about the 17-bit and 18-bit still lifes being constructible at less than one glider per bit, though -- this recipe needs 83 gliders to make a 35-bit still life.

Here's the continuous synthesis, produced by the usual process of being mystified about why chris_c's script isn't working, and then finding another place where the spacing wasn't consistent, and fixing it, and being annoyed that the script still doesn't work, and then finally finding the very last off-by-one problem and getting a good result.

Code: Select all

x = 1449, y = 315, rule = B3/S23

Someone should really patch up that script so that it does auto-alignment between stages, or at least some level of alignment verification, instead of just assuming everything is perfect.

Just found this xs30 and the soup doesn't look extremely promising but there might be something useful because it separates very cleanly into a small pattern that evolves to the still life.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

Based on a soup from Catagolue and in desperate need of improved cleanup, currently at 11 gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 64, y = 81, rule = LifeHistory
60.A$59.A$59.3A37$17.A.A$17.2A$18.A7$17.3A$17.A$18.A$3A$2.A$.A13.3D$

2E4.2D3$25.3A$25.A$26.A7$62.2A$61.2A$63.A!
EDIT: Is there a better existing synth?

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B3-jqr/S01c2-in3
