## Pattern of the Year 2017

For discussion of specific patterns or specific families of patterns, both newly-discovered and well-known.

### Pattern of the Year 2017

I decided to organise a Pattern of the Year competition, starting from 2010. The competition is designed to encourage people to make exciting discoveries and ingenious patterns in Life. The rules are as follows:

• You may enter as many patterns as you like.
• You can vote for at most three patterns.
• You are not allowed to vote for patterns you created or discovered yourself.
• You cannot enter a pattern into more than one Pattern of the Year competition.
• Only Life patterns, i.e. those that operate in the semi-totalistic Moore-neighbourhood rule B3/S23, will be permitted.
• The pattern should be discovered in the year specified.

Apart from the above restrictions, the competition is very open-ended.

The deadline for pattern entries is 2018-01-25, at which point I will begin a new thread for voting. The pattern with the most votes by 2018-02-14 will be declared the Pattern of the Year 2017.

EDIT: Rules modernised in accordance with Dave's post below:

What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Well, of course whoever wants to do the maintenance on Pattern of the Year 2018 obviously gets to set the rules. This seems to be a copy-paste from the original Pattern of the Year 2010 thread.

Is the only-discoverer-can-nominate rule intentional? It hasn't been a feature of the last several Pattern of the Year competitions. Seems like it has worked well to allow anyone to nominate patterns -- tends to bring up a wider variety of interesting stuff to review.

... It appears I brought this up already, exactly half a decade ago:

dvgrn wrote:The first and third rules seem to need an addendum. By tradition and precedent, you're also allowed to nominate an unspecified reasonable number of patterns discovered or engineered by others -- just provide links and proper attribution as usual... According to Calcyman in the 2010 thread, it's okay to vote for patterns you nominated, as long as you didn't have a hand in the construction.

### Re: Pattern of the Year 2017

Getting a few out of the way:

Orthogonoid 2^23: Do you like self-constructing spaceships? Do you not like it when something has a CPU-imploding bounding box but only uses a thin diagonal strip of it? Me too. But the orthogonoid transmits information with MWSSs instead of gliders, letting it fit into a thin horizontal sliver of space instead of a diagonal one, making its bounding box very small (as far as engineered spaceships are concerned).

Single-Channel Quadratic Growth: So you have some gliders and some snarks, and that's basically it. Yet, it's somehow a quadratic growth pattern, which builds itself out of a single stream of gliders. A culmination of single-channel technology that looks like an exercise in how to break HashLife, and combines elegant simplicity with incomprehensibility.

Tanner's p46: A sparky p46 oscillator that various guns can be made from, and it's not the twin bees shuttle. It's still a niche addition to p46 technology, but has already been used to make smaller guns in the gun collection, and is the basis for a small gliderless MWSS gun.

Runny Nose: It's minor, but worth at least a footnote. This 21-bit period 3 oscillator was an unexpected gap in the lists of small objects, which caused a minor investigation into if there was anything else down there. Answer: yes. It's an example of the "beginner's luck" that sometimes happens in this hobby when you search where you're not expected to find anything.

I would like to nominate Two-engine cordership because it is now the smallest 8c/96 spaceship.

The Quest for Tetris behemoth. Personally I don't like this solution at all, but I suppose it deserves recognition if just for the time that went in.
I was going to further nominate some of AbhpzTa's early contributions but it turns out those were 2016 haha. Will probably edit this post with any that come to mind.

My basic impression of that pattern:

### Re: Pattern of the Year 2017

I have a soft spot for this kind of thing, but I'd like to nominate the p148 B29 gun completed by AbhpzTa, Dave Greene, and Adam P. Goucher.

EDIT: I'd additionally like to nominate the 39-glider synthesis of sufficiently large odd N-bit still lifes by Tanner Jacobi, Adam P. Goucher, and Chris Cain, as well as the 38-glider synthesis of sufficiently high even bit counts by the same people and BlinkerSpawn.

Any of these:

January 2017: Stephen Eker found a record-setting small Garden of Eden with a population of 50 and only 88 ON cells.

February 2017: wildmyron's fixed-length tail for a lightspeed bubble of arbitrary width in the 'stripes' agar.

March 2017: AbhpzTa's three-glider synthesis of a switch engine.

June 2017: new and much smaller spiral-growth pattern based on single-channel technology, demonstrating the construction of lossless signal elbows (Snark reflectors). -- I may be a little biased about this one, and the impenetrable jargon probably gives it away. Also in June, new Demonoid and Orthogonoid spaceships.

September 2017: Also, a small "tremi-Snark" period tripler allowed the gun collection to be packed into a smaller space... yet again.

October 2017: discovery of Kazyan's quadri-Snark.

November 2017: color-preserving and color-changing "semi-cenarks".

December 2017: dbell's adjustable cordership and the Synthesis of 25P3H1V0.2.

That was the original wording from 2010. It's possible that Calcyman might be convinced to adopt Alexey's voting system from 2016:

Alexey_Nigin wrote:Vote only for the patterns you like, and give each of them 1, 2, or 3 stars depending on how much you like them. You can vote for your own patterns if you want. Here is an example vote:

#01 *
#02 **
#04 ***
#08 *

That voting system got at least one positive comment (and for the record I liked it too):

### Re: Pattern of the Year 2017

Guess I'll nominate my triple wickstretcher from back in June, also in Golly as Patterns/HashLife/triple-Snark-wick-extruder.rle.gz . It uses pretty much the same technology as, but is maybe a little more well-behaved than, the smallest spiral-growth pattern -- seems to run at a reasonable speed, and then it should give you a decent speedup after it runs long enough, if you have enough memory to keep hashtiles through a full cycle.

... That's if you switch the pattern over to the HashLife algo before you start it. I checked the pattern in as an rle.gz because it was smaller that way -- but I probably shouldn't have done that if I wanted it to live in the HashLife folder.

RLE

This is PotY *2017* and the gun was discovered in 2018 so no. (And even then it might not meet the notability guidelines. Though they're much less strict than wikipedai)

Note that I am confused: the mentioned constuction heavily based on Kazyan's and Sokwe's p46 MWSS guns - so I encourage the authors to merge if they are allowing it!
Is it worth to notice that the unit cell also counts as an alien rule discovery, improving "portability" of logic universality results from 2005 by Jason Summers.

### Re: Pattern of the Year 2017

To clarify, these are all the entries I see:
Edit: adding some more that were suggested:

Some of the entries (such as runny nose) are not that notable, but while that have no chance of winning the competition, It's probably fine to keep them as the POTY can also function as recognition for some interesting but not very interesting/notable/useful patterns.

Lastly, I'm too biased to tell, but are the stable signal converters created mostly by dvgrn and myself worthy enough for entry?

Edit 2: Sorry Macbi, I should have tested that that link went where I thought went . I've added the single channel quadratic-growth pattern as a separate entry.

Well, I'm biased too, but really anybody is perfectly well allowed to nominate anything they want to nominate. So please add them to the list!

Before it's too late, I'd like to nominate my cumulative sum generator: a device that takes in a stream of gliders and returns a stream of gliders whose positions correspond to the partial sums of the positions of the original gliders.

I think you've accidentally combined the single channel spiral-growth pattern (by Dave Greene) and the single channel quadratic-growth pattern (by Dave Greene and me). At the moment the entry you describe as spiral-growth links to the quadratic-growth pattern.

To clarify, does this mean three equal votes, or ranked votes, like some of the POTY competitions have used in the past?

Sounds like equal votes for now: the ranked-votes system from last year didn't have this limitation.

POTY competitions do not have rules regarding notability; you're thinking of the LifeWiki, most likely.
