A stable asychronous synchronizer circuit

The object shown here is a stable asychronous synchronizer circuit.

It accepts two gliders as inputs and generates an output glider only when both of the inputs have arrived.

This differs from a normal AND gate in that there are no constraints on the timings of the two input gliders. The input gliders can arrive in either order, or simultaneously, and with any phase difference.

The base reaction used is the creation of two eaters which react with each other when they are both (almost) completely constructed. The timing of the leftmost two gliders is totally independent of the timing of the topmost two gliders. The final result is the same in all cases.

This interesting reaction of two eaters has been known for a long time, but using it was not fully practical until stable circuitry was available.

I added an eater as bait to the reaction in order to generate a glider. The bottom half of the circuit regenerates the bait after it had been used.

This circuit could be used in asychronous logic, where parts of the circuit need to wait until previous parts are complete. For example, the numbers contained in two sliding block memories could be read simultaneously, with further action taken only after both readouts are complete.

This is my first example of making a stable logic circuit, and I already know it can be improved (especially in the lower half). If anyone wants to do that, please do so! I would like to see the smallest such circuit.

Using a block as bait makes things smaller. I tried to find a way of preventing the extra boat from forming in the first place but to no avail.

Nice improvement! I needed some welding practice, and found a good way to tighten up part of the now-obsolete reconstruction circuit, but now it isn't needed:

The R64+NW31 edge shooters are probably not quite the smallest option. With edge shooters on both splitter outputs, there might be a smaller diamond-shaped eater factory such that two mirror-image copies could be used to build both eaters. As it is, the two eater factories look very similar to each outer, but you'll run into entertaining problems if you try to replace one with the other.

Here is a new version of my synchonizer circuit. The top two halfs are symmetrical. The bottom part uses two blocks to perturb the eater reaction and a beehive as bait.

As shown, the input gliders travel symmetrically through their two conduits for a pretty view.

It's good that one edge shooter works in all four locations. If a smaller one can be found with the same 1hd clearance (needed in the NE to let the output glider out) then it could just be swapped in everywhere and the timing would still work.

There might be other ways to reduce the size a little more. I wonder if there are any other H-to-2Gs with the same rating as this one, that don't need such a long Snark chain to delay one of the gliders. A really lucky H-to-2G could just be connected straight to the edge shooters, or maybe with just one Snark pair on one side or the other. We don't really know, since the majority of H-to-2Gs haven't been added to the toolkit yet.

Removing a Snark pair speeds up the signal by 8 ticks. Here's a tightened-up version of the synchronizer that illustrates that. It should probably be made symmetrical again, but I'll leave it this way for now:

There's a nice feature of this AND circuit that I didn't notice before, related to situations where you're sure that one signal will come in (but you don't know when exactly) and one signal may or may not come in, and you want an output only if the two signals are both present -- but you also want to be able to reset the circuit without getting a signal out. Probably not, though chris_c built the pattern so maybe there's a reason that I don't know. On big patterns I used to arbitrarily keep some of both Snark types, so that I could copy/paste whichever variant fit best into tight spaces.

I think that's because he kept this snark variant from before 2018, where only the 34-cell variant was displayed.
