Indeed. It suggests that Schick engines may be able to form naturally, just by some convenient junk being in the right place at the right time.

I've also amended a couple of bugs in apgsearch, so it now distinguishes nearby (but disjoint) standard spaceships, and correctly scores soups (there was a typo). More results coming soon...

By the way, I'll be releasing this census script when it's nicely polished. It can process around 100 soups per (second . core . GHz), so a modern 4-core PC can pretty easily process 1000 soups per second. I'm waiting until after setting up a server to collect these results, though. And until after I've done some more rigorous testing (at the moment it's almost definitely 99.999999% reliable at identifying objects, but it would be nice to add a couple more nines to that).

Hi everyone!
I'm new to this forum and to Conway's Game of Life in general. Some days ago I've coded my own implementation of the Game of Life (using the original rulestring) for fun and yesterday I was doing some simulations. In the last of them I put some cells randomly and after a while I saw a spaceship. Today I did a quick research on pentadecathlon.com (http://pentadecathlon.com/objects/class ... php?part=1) but I didn't find such a spaceship. It is made up of 17 cells and travels without changing its shape. I can't provide a RLE or MCell file describing this spaceship because my software is a very elementary version of Conway's Game of Life but I made some screenshots and a video that shows how this spaceship travels through the space. Here I attached a screenshot in which each pixel represents a live cell and the spaceship is the structure pointed out by the blue ellipse, if you need the video I'll upload it somewhere and provide here the link. Has someone seen this spaceship before?

Interesting! You won't find such a spaceship on pentadecathlon.com, because your program clearly isn't running the standard rules for Conway's Life, B3/S23 -- new birth with three neighbors, survival with two or three neighbors.

It would take some serious detective work to figure out which rule is actually being used, so that

travels "without changing its shape", but the rule generally creates complex maze-like patterns. Can you explain more about what transition rules your program is applying?

A video really isn't necessary, though probably it would make it possible to figure out the rule.

Hmmm, I intended to use the B3/S23 rule... So it appears that I did a mistake somewhere in my source code? I just did a quick check but seems ok, I'll do a deeper check as soon as I can. All I can tell you is that using my rule this type of spaceship appears to be very common: Yesterday I obtained one or two similar structures using an initial random pattern. Another information is that population grows very fast in the first generations and the this growth slows down and forms a sort of "big cloud" on the screen. The bad news is that I also checked the video I made and I found out that you can't see pixels as good as in the screenshot, so it mades harder to find out the actual rule from the video. But I also made other videos when I obtained similar structures so I will check which of them has the best quality and I will upload it and post here the link. Thank you for your help and interest!

You're not running NaiveLife, are you? (The one where you update cells sequentially in rows from left-to-right then top-to-bottom, rather than updating all cells simultaneously.)

Yes, this is exactly the way I update cells in my program. Do you think this is the explanation for the spaceship I posetd before?

I'm not sure these soup results are going to count as "accidental discoveries" for much longer -- there are going to be so many of them!

Maybe they should have their own thread... but really I think it will take a little more organization than that, to get the server set up to collect larger volumes of data. It will also be good to have a way to retrieve the source soup for any unusual still life or oscillator (not just the top 50 or 100 highest scoring).

I'm already getting to where I'm a lot less interested in highest-scoring combination of two pulsars and an LWSS (for example) than in the unusual still lifes. There are dozens in every million-soup run, but there's quite a bit of overlap between runs -- I've seen the symmetrical 28-cell

a couple of times already, for example. So of course I'm really most interested in the still lifes that nobody has ever seen floating in the soup before... and for that we'll need a central server.

-- While I'm wishing, a central database of known glider constructions would be nice, too. I'm seeing a good scattering of 17- to 20-cell still lifes, for example -- but unless I know that one of them is very difficult to glider-construct or has no known recipe, it's most likely an easy known construction, so probably not worth going back to find the soup that the still life came from.

Maybe we could add another column into the census table, which lists the seed/number for the first soup which generates each pattern (a bit like the 'lseed' listed in censuses made by Andrzej Okrasinski's screensaver).
