This is the thread, as stated in the title, for your accidental discoveries. B-heptomino to glider:

My rectifier was an accidental discovery, since I wasn't deliberately trying to make a reflector:

Run Mark Niemeic's B-heptomino syntheses and you may notice a middleweight spaceship. The essential reaction is captured below:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 21, rule = B3/S23

I discovered that a p30 Gosper Glider Gun can be used to invert a glider coming from the front:

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
24bo$22bobo$12b2o6b2o12b2o$11bo3bo4b2o12b2o$2o8bo5bo3b2o$2o8bo3bob2o4b
obo$10bo5bo7bo$11bo3bo$12b2o13$27b3o$27bo$28bo!
I was firing said gun into a debris field. A glider came back towards the gun very close to the stream. I thought for sure the gun was done for and was amazed when the gun survived and a hole was left in the glider stream.

I tried pairing two p30s together. The reaction takes out two incoming gliders and one outgoing glider:

Code: Select all

x = 132, y = 114, rule = B3/S23

2o$99b2o16bo5bo3b2o$93b2o4b2o17bo3bo$93b2o4b2o18b2o$101bobo$103bo!
Trying to use it as a memory loop in the traditional way failed (It erased the information):

Code: Select all

x = 129, y = 108, rule = B3/S23
$26bo$24bobo$14b2o6b2o12b2o$13bo3bo4b2o12b2o$2b2o8bo5bo3b2o$2b2o8bo3bo

However, It does work as a memory loop to store groups of one or two gliders, with one empty space between each group (Distance between guns lengthened to better show that the memory is stored.):

Code: Select all

x = 170, y = 149, rule = B3/S23

B to B advancer:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
6bo$5b3o$4b2obo2$2o$b2o$o!
In 16 generations there will be another B-heptomino, 8 cells advanced vertically from its starting location. The debris will vaporize but gets in the way of a repeat of the reaction.

I was originally trying to make a puffer, when I found this interesting thing a while ago:

Code: Select all

x = 48, y = 62, rule = B3/S23

I named it Base.rle for some reason.

It "sorts" out gliders.

This LWSS to glider converter uses a Herschel,
but it unexpectedly converts any *WSS to a glider

The BST is most likely less common than the 100th most common still life.

Oops! It may very well be yours, I did not file it properly in the correct directory and with your name in the title, sorry about that. I did add the catalyst to it though. I have literally tens of thousands of saved patterns and they are not well organized/documented.

That could make a relatively cheap glider synthesis. One would have to hit it with random gliders to get rid of the extra debris, but if we're lucky it will take just one, resulting in a 6-glider synthesis (we probably aren't so lucky).

for now, 8-glider synthesis:

In each case the rightmost glider is there to clean up one last object that would form otherwise.

An 8-glider solution to synthesize an 18-bit still life:

I don't know if this 18-bit still life already has a glider synthesis.

15 bit still life in 5 gliders by Dave Buckingham:

Which, using a reaction by Mark Neimiec, can be turned into the 18 bit still life using 3 more Gliders

Code: Select all

x=14, y=14, h=2, v=1

But that still requires a total of 8 Gliders.

A little more research shows that the P4 is uses a rotor compatible to one found by Dean Hickerson. This oscillator is shown at the top, the next two are hybrids consisting of old and new halves, while the bottom is another variation of Hickerson's oscillator I didn't have in my lists.

Two gliders & two blocks. One glider is reflected, one block is deleted. Other interesting things happen when one of the four objects is deleted.

What's significant about the spontaneously appearing reaction with the gliders and the LWSSs?

Nothing much. I was just showing how I accidentally discovered this reaction. I'm very interested in any reaction that produces closely aligned pairs of gliders. It might be possible to tame the glider / LWSS reaction using some still-life catalysts.
