I haven't tried compiling with clang, but it may be as simple as just removing the -fno-tree-loop-distribute-patterns option from the mknative file - that's just a small optimization anyway and it would be interesting to know if that works!

That's more than 10^18 different patterns to try... From systematic trends it would take about 80000 years to complete.
It you want to try a search that I've been planning to do but haven't started you could try 15 oncells in a 9-by-5 bounding box - that should take about 3 weeks to run. But it might be better to wait for the new verision I'm working on.

Removing the optimization works. Also, when should you be done with the new version?

What's important is keeping a number of on-cells and a grid size that are low enough to prevent combinatorial explosion while being high enough to allow methuselae. The limiting factor in these searches is not the ratio of ON cells but the number of possible combinations of them.

I agree! There are examples of methuselahs with both high and low ratios:

It's also worth mentioning that the program assumes all "smaller" searches have already been made, so that if a seed evolves to a pattern with the same bounding box and fewer cells, or a smaller bounding box with fewer or the same number of cells, it will be discarded.

I've done enough work on the new version to know it will be a lot faster, but I can't make any promises about when it will be done.

Yes, no doubt about it. Still, its MCPS is 9 (not 8 which would be minimal for 8 cells) - if we take MCPS as measure for clustering.

Is this 8-cell version of "Jaydot" known? The version in the wiki entry for "Methusalehs" has 9 cells, last the same time (6929), but has a smaller bounding box (6*3 instead of 6*5).

The version of Jaydot just posted has the same MCPS as the one in the wiki.

Here is an alternative predecessor of M7468:

x = 6, y = 4, rule = B3/S23

Same number of cells as the version in the wiki:

x = 6, y = 4, rule = B3/S23

but an MCPS of 10 rather than 9. However, in a certain sense, it has a better claim to be a "single cluster" than the wiki version. In the wiki version, the two polyplets making up the pattern act independently for the first step, giving rise to the same successor as they would if entirely alone: their only shared neighbour cell has only two "on" neighbours, one from each polyplet. In the new(?) version, none of the three polyplets is independent in this sense.

In the wiki version, the two polyplets making up the pattern act independently for the first step, giving rise to the same successor as they would if entirely alone: their only shared neighbour cell has only two "on" neighbours, one from each polyplet. In the new(?) version, none of the three polyplets is independent in this sense.

A methusaleh I found just messing around in Golly. Lasts about 6900 generations.
Also, this is the first time I have seen a MWSS come from a methusaleh.

A 24-cell, 18x16 pattern that lasts 6900 generations doesn't really count as "long-lived", if you compare it to the patterns on the list of long-lived methuselahs.

I don't have something new to release, sorry! It's still something I hope to work on in the future.

The bounding box of Bunnies 9 is 8-by-7, not 8-by-8, and it is found as expected with
$ ./meth_h4_256 8 7 9 10000 0

Note that each search assumes that all searches with a smaller bounding box and the same or lower number of on-cells, and all searches with the same bounding box and a lower number of on-cells have already been made. Thus all patterns with a bounding box not exactly as requested will be skipped.

I mentioned this already here ("It will only report results with exactly the requested bounding box size and on-cell count.")

EDIT:
The sqrt(log(t)) limit is only when the building box is counted throughout the evolution. When only the initial box is counted, it can last a lot longer than 2^(x y) where x and y are the initial building box size by growing quickly beyond its building box (as the posted pattern does).
It takes roughly (using Conway chained arrow notation) 2->2->3->6 * 4 generations to stabilize.
I mean, I don't think there's others, because 2^n grows very fast...
