That also gives 14.269 (EDIT: not 14.239) and 15.782 from 10. When and where was the improvement for 13.82 announced? I hadn't been aware of it.
What I was trying to ask there is if it seemed reasonable *to* reduce 13.82 enough that 15.786 could be removed.
I wasn't aware of any actual improvement at the time.

15.1065 in an inefficient 14 gliders:

I've been trying to do 15.497 and 15.477 but it is very difficult because both have hardly any soups, and neither have many smaller still-lifes that they can be constructed off.

It can be reduced to 10 by using a 3-glider spark on one side. I know of almost 40 ways to make this spark from 3 gliders; unfortunately, I couldn't find way to combine two of them together successfully. It should be possible with 9. This also reduces the corresponding 20-bit mold and 21-bit jam to 17 and 15 gliders respectively, now both <1 glider/bit!

Often, when a loaf is needed, loaf+blinker can be used instead for the same cost, in the hopes of improving cleanup (similarly, block on block or two skewed blocks in place of block, etc.). This knocks off one more from the base 14.602, reducing it to 8, 15.620 to 12, and 15.947 to 13:

Very nice! This is actually 15.477, but that one's also on the list (15.497 has the carrier flipped the other way).

Is there a converter for python to carrier in 2 or 3 gliders?

If so, 15.497 may be synthesizable in 14 gliders via this predecessor of a related 16-bit still life:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

I had a sneaking suspicion that the toad and block could be synthesized in less than 5, but my original plan was to synthesize the toad in 3 and use a stray spark to create the block from a fourth glider. After searching the known 3G toad syntheses and getting a few close calls, I reached the syntheses that rely on the octomino's natural toad, and realized that the octomino also leaves two natural blocks soon after, one of which is in the right place. It took a while to modify the cleanup to leave just one of the blocks (most options either destroyed neither or both) but I was left with a better reduction than I expected.
