It's definitely new -- congratulations!
Yup, fairly sure I would have noticed that if it had gone by already. Nice discovery! What search were you doing?

It combines nicely with extensible fireship technology:

A width 12 even symmetric search with ntzfind (rokicki's). I noticed a repeating component, and substituted a Copperhead in for another part and got the ship.

EDIT, C/10 w7 a is negative, best partial:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 22, rule = B3/S23

Congrats on the new c/10 pushalong!
What about naming it "Coppergut"? Because at it's front is the copperhead's main head and at the back it has the little "tail" of a block.

That name seems fine, but before I say yes, does anyone have any other suggestions for a name?

Other potential possibilities: "Cuttlefish" (reused from a suggestion for Copperhead itself), "Chalcocite" (the mineral form of Cu₂S, as this ship has two Copperhead-like components and one distinct one), or simply "78P10H1V0".

A 74 bit 2c/5 ship which seems to be new:

Cottonmouth -- sticking with the "snakes starting on C" theme.
I was reserving that name for a new velocity, and would have named the fireship it. Fits here well, though.

Snakes starting with C:
Cylindrophis
Colubridae
Candoia
Calabar python/Calabaria

On the topic of Spaceships, how can I help?

A for awesome wrote:"Chalcocite" (the mineral form of Cu₂S, as this ship has two Copperhead-like components and one distinct one).
That's my favourite suggestion so far.

Check the fourth and fifth rows from the bottom in Golly's Patterns/Life/Spaceships/c4-orthogonal.rle. There are lots of known completions with the same first seven rows. Might be some more matches hiding elsewhere, I didn't look really carefully.

If a tail can be found to stabilize the next seven rows, that might be a new ship. But this may be search space that's already been covered pretty well. Not being a c/4 spaceship search expert, I wouldn't really know.

I like Cottonmouth, it's easy to pronounce fluidly and has to do with snakes. I think Cottonmouth would be a good name for the pushalong.

While we're at it, "snake" could be made an (un)official nickname for a c/10 spaceship. ;)

(There's some potential for confusion there, granted, but I don't see it being a problem in practice, anymore than -- say -- the existence of two different barges.)

Extending this C/8 partial at w10 g was negative:

The search took around 131 CPU hours. This still does not mean a C/8 does not exist at w10 g, but it does show that it does not with this frontend. Longest partial:

@wildmyron, I credited you as "WM" in ships-2c5-unique.rle since "AP" was already being used for Aidan Pierce. Do you want to be credited differently?

Sorry, I forgot to respond to this.

Thank you for continuing to maintain this collection and confirming the ships I posted are worth including. I'm happy for WM to be used as it is unambiguous and relates to me. If you used 3 letter initialisations then AJP would be appropriate, but it doesn't seem like there's any need for that and the two letter forms do format nicely.

I've spent the last month or so using ntzfind to search for low-width high-period ships, in hopes of finding the next Copperhead. Unfortunately there have been no positive results, but here are all the negative results:

Speed - Asymmetric width - Odd width - Even width - Gutter width

c/11 - 5 - 6 - 6 - 6
2c/11 - 6 - 6 - 6 - 6
3c/11 - 6 - 6 - 6 - 6

That's a nice set of results, a shame they're all negative, but not too surprising. A few of them are duplicates of earlier results posted here, but it's good to have a summary of these higher period results in one place. Some of the previous results: 5c/11, w10; 3c/13, w7

Here's a non-monotonic frontend for a 2c/5 spaceship.

Is such a ship known? I couldn't find an example in my perusal of the pattern collections, the wiki, or this forum. There are quite a few alternative frontends, I just chose this one and tried to extend it. I was quite hopeful of being able to complete it after it split in two and there were several narrow connections in the extended partials on both sides. But after meandering through the search space with JLS and sifting through the various narrow connections trying to find known components which could complete the ship, I've been unsuccessful. There were several other partials extending the botttom connection but I haven't recorded all of them. This was just the longest I've managed to extend the two parts (most time spent on the bottom part) although perhaps not the most promising.
