Thread For Requesting Help

Postby Alexey_Nigin » September 6th, 2015, 6:04 am

Sometimes people creating complex patterns need help with some small component. Making a thread for every such problem seems a waste, so let's collect them all in one place.

I will start. Can anybody synthesize this thing:

x = 21, y = 21, rule = B3/S23

There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't.

The standard blinker puffer 1 synthesis seems to work fine. Here's 81 ticks before the posted pattern:

Is there any way to place the prepond in this component?:

Sure, how about like this?

To find this, I just went to Mark Niemiec's search page and looked at pond syntheses. As you probably found, the two-glider syntheses are no good because one of the gliders would have to pass through the still life. Luckily there are plenty of other options in the pond-making toolkit.

Does anyone have a collection of phi spark syntheses?

Or pi syntheses?

Spefically, phi sparks that use this predecessor:

x = 3, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

Pi syntheses, yes (Mark Niemiec's database). Looks like there isn't a similar stamp collection for the phi spark, unless I missed it. The recipes are certainly out there, though the majority probably converge one or two ticks after your specific predecessor:

x = 5, y = 6, rule = B3/S23

Been trying to find a Loafer-to-G converter. I've managed to get it down to the pi sequence, but I can't seem to go any further.

x = 37, y = 18, rule = B3/S23

How would I go about turning this pi into a glider (preferably by extending this specific conduit)? Make sure it can still allow loafers in from outside.

Yes, I know this is an old thread, but creating more just causes clutter.

Yeah, the octomino has a common grandchild with century, which has that recognizable "three blocks, and a toad for a little while, and a blinker" output. Most toads in soup probably are due to a modified century reaction.

Let's see, sharing a common grandparent would mean we're talking about second cousins. Sharing a common grandchild must mean that this octomino and the canonical century are (-2)nd cousins...?

Looks like you're about out of room for direct H-to-tub and H-to-tub converters (and I don't seem to have collected any H-to-tubs, anyway).

However, it looks like there's enough room for gliders coming in from three possible directions -- you could complete an H-to-flotilla converter with another four or five synchronized gliders, if you wanted it badly enough.

Then there's the problem of putting in signal splitters and synchronizing the gliders with the Herschels. Otherwise you just have a (3H+4G)-to-flotilla converter, and that sounds kind of hard to use.

How can I restore the block that reacts away with the B-heptomino here? The top block acts as a catalyst, but after having tried to use the dot sparks to the right I found no way to restore the block that reacts away. (By the way, this creates a Herschel in gen 20)

The real question here is, why would you want to restore such block? There is no real way to produce the B there from any other conduit, so even if you find a solution to your problem it would not do any good to anything.

To answer your question, what search tools have you tried? It's kinda impossible to find a catalyst without proper tools, and we have now quete nice collection of those, are you aware of them? So maybe your question should be more general: how one finds catalysts?

gmc_nxtman wrote:Is there any stable conduit that produces a clean eater capable of blocking a glider lane?

No direct edgy X-to-eater factories are known. It's easy to build a circuit that synchronizes a couple of gliders to build an eater so that it blocks a glider lane -- this is done in the stable universal regulator, for example -- which still needs to be rebuilt to do the synchronization more efficiently. It doesn't have to be set up so that the lane that is blocked is the same lane that triggers the reconstruction of the eater.

Fishhook eaters are pretty rare, and any other object with glider-eating capability is even rarer. For a direct glider-lane blocker factory, is it allowable to catch the glider and make a boat-bit (so that aircraft carriers, snakes, etc. would also be possibilities?)

There are other kinds of permanent switches that have the effect of permanently blocking a glider signal, though. Some of them also allow the signal channel to be re-opened with a single glider (equivalent to shooting down the eater after it is constructed):

You can use other H-to-Gs at the end, and/or add a few Snarks to put the output glider back on the original lane -- depends on exactly what you need this glider-lane-blocking mechanism for.

Does anyone have a collection of simple edgeshooting spark syntheses? Domino, dot, duoplet, etc.

Can someone hit this with a few gliders so a loaf placed in the correct position would form a functional eater3?

x = 11, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

How is "this" created?
We can already construct an eater3 in 20(21?) gliders. So unless that SL can be made really cheaply (to allow room for components) it won't break new ground.
LifeWiki: Like Wikipedia but with more spaceships. [citation needed]
