Stable glider reflector

I have finally made my first stable contraption, inspired by calcyman's stable patterns. It is a stable glider reflector, not using the snark or syringe, and it contains one eater2. It has a bounding box of 95 x 74, and a recovery time of 600. (EDIT: Improved to 488)

That's a fairly decent recovery time, and only one eater2 away from being Spartan. The old Silver reflector has a better bounding box, though, and is easier to construct and just a little slower to recover.

At the bottom of this post is a similar smallish 90-degree reflector and a related G-to-H, also made possible by recently discovered converter conduits.

Pretty bad recovery of 656, yet two-directional and almospartan (contains a table on table and a dead-spark coil, but they're fairly easy to build)

Has anyone else used the tandem-glider idea before? It seems very difficult to synchronise herschels without using way too many transceivers... I think I might try Hersrch.

Yes. Did you follow the link at the bottom of my previous reply? Different tandem glider, but the same general idea.

Tandem gliders are also useful in the H-to-G(n) collection to make the second output lane adjustable in a Spartan or almost-Spartan way.

EDIT: Hmm, there's a very familiar-looking 490-tick reflector posted back when Guam's semi-Snark was first found. I think 488 ticks isn't actually quite workable, because of sparks from the collapsing beehive.

I remember experimenting with cleaning up the old Herschel receiver with Snarks, but maybe I didn't' try anything with the loaf2GtoG. Anyway it's always worth getting a new set of eyes on the problem -- you never know what might turn up.

You don't need the block-on-table there, by the way -- a nice simple boat will work just as well. And here again a repeat time of 656 doesn't quite work with that configuration. You can improve the repeat time to 643 ticks by moving the loaf2GtoG two cells to the northwest.

It could definitely be compacted. Any thoughts? (I think it's a simple contraption, but the concept of using a keeper might be new and I think it's pretty cool)

Those look suspiciously like p240 guns, not p144.

Nice! This is certainly a new unconventional alliance between Herschel technology, p240 guns, and edge-repair spaceships. The idea of keeping a still life at the edge of a spaceship lane has been around for a while.

It looks as if you could easily get rid of the Snark by putting the whole mechanism on one side of the spaceship lane:

In general it's a very difficult problem to sort out what object or constellation can be placed in this way, that produces the largest number of useful reconstruction signals, or that can be reconstructed with the smallest number of gliders or Herschels:

The above could be built into a stable circuit that would put out a glider every time an edge-repair spaceship went past, and then rebuild the beehive+ship constellation, without needing any guns or other periodic components. Recovery time would be relatively slow, but once the constellation is in position it could detect a passing spaceship with any timing -- no mod-240 limitations like the current model.

Of course there's the existential problem: where are all these edge-repair spaceships coming from, anyway? Until there's a mechanism to build them at unpredictable intervals, it's hard to explain exactly why we need a detector for them...!

Nice work on making it one-sided! I don't have the herschel skills to make a stable heisenburp based on the ship + hive constellation you posted, although I'm sure it's possible.

I did a similar search along these lines, but didn't get any good results. I tried ptbsearch (with ptblist) up to 4~5 spartan catalysts. Only searched for hives, though.

Scorbie found it here. The closest call I've seen besides it is Kazyan's, although it's nowhere near as complete as the former.

It looks to me like this could be improved quite a bit, by connecting an H-to-2G to the syringe, bouncing one of the gliders back to do the cleanup, and optionally adding another syringe to the remaining glider output to get a Herschel back again.

The recovery time to beat is 508 ticks -- Gustavo's LWSS->G will be able to manage that, once he finally gets around to putting the pieces together, and of course LWSS->H is just an additional syringe.

Nice! Under 500 ticks is quite an impressive milestone.

I think a different H-to-2G will be needed to beat the bounding box as well as the repeat time of Gustavo's equally impressive 508-tick 65x73 LWSS->G.

I'm still betting that eventually a single-stage direct LWSS->G will be found that blows both of these out of the water -- but that doesn't mean that I know where to look for it!

People here are using many different G-to-Hs. I only know the syringe. These G-to-Hs often leave some junk.

The only G-to-Hs I see in this thread are syringes..?

If you mean the first ones in the thread, (like the one that creates a surplus beehive) that was discovered a very long time ago, and was the basis of many stable reflectors until the syringe and the snark came up.

A shorter recovery time may be possible using a staged-recovery system. For instance, if you could pipe off the bhepto to produce the requisite glider, this would work:

I hadn't noticed before that the LWSS->G mechanism accepts MWSSes perfectly happily. So now there are small fast 45-degree and 135-degree MWSS->G converters.

-- Uh-oh. If a direct H-to-LWSS or H-to-MWSS is found, quite possibly a fair fraction of the gun collection will suddenly be obsolete again (because orthogonal signals fit so much better into long thin minimum-area bounding boxes)... Ah, well, time enough to burn that bridge if we come to it.

Seems as if HWSSes are energetic enough that they should be easier to handle than the other two, if anything.
