This time I checked jslife-osc-supplement (and jslife, and pentadecathlon.com, and the wiki, and Mark Niemiec's Life page...), but didn't find this xp6 that recently showed up in C4_4. Does anyone recognize it, or is it a new object?

It doesn't seem to be in DRH_oscillators either (assuming you haven't checked that), so it might be promising.

I'm notoriously bad at recognizing oscillators, in fact just about anything, so I didn't realize (though I had a feeling it must've been known). Thanks for the pointer!

Time to ask-- How does one convert "LifeHistory" into simple RLE format? At a minimum, the Gliders layer.

With Safari, the LifeViewer Ctrl-C gives me "Show in Viewer" when I paste.

If there's a way in Golly to extract it, it's hidden well.

There's a new addition to Golly 3.x -- not well advertised, partly because people who upgraded and kept their GollyPrefs won't get the default shortcuts.

On a new instance of Golly 3.x, Alt+H (Windows/Linux) or I believe Option+H (Mac) will convert a B3/S23 pattern to LifeHistory, and Alt+J / Option+J will convert LifeHistory back to plain-vanilla Life.

These shortcuts are just pointers to script files -- toLifeHistory.lua and toLife.lua in the Scripts/Lua folder.

For older versions of Golly, there are Python versions of the scripts floating around, e.g., in the LifeHistory archive in the Rule Table Repository. But the old toLife.py is much slower for large patterns... and it's worth moving up to Golly 3.x anyway.

The Ctrl+C problem with LifeViewer is one I used to see also. I thought it had been fixed in recent builds, but I just tried it in Chrome and got the same "Show in Viewer" string. From way back, the way people are trained to get the RLE is to click the "Select All" link in the code box, then Ctrl+C. (That got broken in a recent version of Chrome, too, but it's back in working order again now.)

Alt-H/Alt-J doesn't work for me. I'm on Windows 10.

If you had an old GollyPrefs on your system from a 2.x version of Golly, then that's what will happen -- Golly won't overwrite your existing preferences with new default ones. (But I seem to remember you're familiar with that).

You can make Alt+H and Alt+J work, very easily. Go to File > Preferences > Keyboard, type Alt+H, and choose the file Scripts/Lua/toLifeHistory.lua ... then do the same for Alt+J, choosing toLife.lua .

I haven't yet upgraded to Golly 3.x, so I can't try that yet. One thing I have done in the past is to manually switch the rule from LifeHistory to Life, but the results were rarely usable (i.e. the shadow cells turned into living cells). What I usually do is to take the LifeHistory RLE, paste it into Notepad, and then do manual global replaces of A (and occasionally some other letters) by o, all other letters (typically B) by b, and . by b. As this only takes a few seconds, I don't feel it overly cumbersome.

Yeah, I do the same thing whenever I'm stuck on some foreign computer and just want to clean up one LifeHistory file. But that's not really something to recommend to people who aren't entirely comfortable with the details of RLE format.

It also only takes a few seconds to set up a keyboard shortcut to point to a LifeHistory-to-Life conversion script -- and then you have really instantaneous cleanup available in Golly, even if it's an older version. Here's a good Python LifeHistory-to-Life script by simsim314 -- handles all the marked states and gray cells correctly.

In the other direction, if you want a keyboard shortcut, you can actually set up the key combination of your choice to open a rule file directly, like Rules/Life.rule.

Okay. Setting up the keyboard equivalent worked.

Thanks. I couldn't even find a description of the encoding, either. Now at least I should have enough information that I should be able to add this converter as yet another feature in my LifeUtils app.

A complete summary of multistate RLE format is in Golly's "File Formats" help document.

It's straightforward-ish for rules with up to 24 states, but then gets a little arbitrary after that.
For two-state rules, a "b" represents an off cell, and a "o" represents an on cell. For rules with more than two states, a "." represents a zero state; states 1..24 are represented by "A".."X", states 25..48 by "pA".."pX", states 49..72 by "qA".."qX", and on up to states 241..255 represented by "yA".."yO". The pattern reader is flexible and will permit "b" and "." interchangeably and "o" and "A" interchangeably.
