Gamedziner wrote:Honestly, all 1-by-x soups are symmetric, so that gives them a certain advantage in discovering new stuff. Should symmetric soups be counted as natural from here on out? Or should the 1-by-x type soups not count as natural? Just throwing these ideas out for consideration.
"Natural", to me, means "arising from random starting conditions", of which asymmetric (square, or reasonably close-to-square) soups are only a rough approximation -- going back to that underlying definition I'd say anything that is by definition symmetric, whether it's 1-by-x or one of the regular "higher" soup symmetries, is not natural.

That said, this thread isn't just for natural objects, is it? But it would be nice if those announcing new discoveries provided all pertinent information (including, at the very least, an indication of the (pseudo-)symmetry in question and a link to the object's Catagolue page).

This is harder than it looks. This took about thirty tries by hand to find something at least remotely interesting:

Code: Select all

x = 75, y = 1, rule = B3/S23
3ob8ob6o2b6o2b8ob8o2b6o2b6ob8ob3o!
Another one:

Code: Select all

x = 98, y = 1, rule = B3/S23
3ob8ob6o2b6o2b8o8b7o9b8o2b6o2b6ob8ob3o!
Here we go! Now we're on to something!

Code: Select all

x = 98, y = 1, rule = B3/S23
3ob8ob6o2b6o2b8o3b7ob5o8b8o2b6o2b6ob8ob3o!

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B3-jqr/S01c2-in3
3bo$4bo$o2bo$2o2$2o$o2bo$4bo$3bo!

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3/S2-i3-y4i

I'm a little out of practice, but at least with three kickbacks on a side instead of two, I don't see a problem:

I didn't think hard enough to make sure there was no solution with four kickbacks total. Most likely it's in there somewhere...?

EDIT: Silly me -- looks like I threw away the third pair of kickbacks, switching from a mirror-image solution to a rotationally symmetric one, and didn't even notice.

Using a wider definition of "result" than usual--

I thought it was quite remarkable that this 18-bitter, xs18_2lla8oz069c, which has not previously made much of a name for itself, appearing only 8 times in C1 and never in other (pseudo)-symmetries, has shown up 27 times in i2x128 of all symmetries already, from barely more than 10 million soups.

I guess it's just one of those SLs that just happens to have one reaction that always makes it:

I'm wondering what other still lifes this happens with, in other asymmetric symmetries.
Obviously, 2x128 results in loads of hybridised snakes, but apart from the very obvious, there have to be weird n-bitters with the same induction.
