Nice! Too busy replacing other sparks to check that possibility, I guess.
Flipping one of the halves to give mirror symmetry gives "22-bit p4 oscillator #1", and now with this reduction I'm sure there's a way to get there in less than 16 gliders.

Wow! Very impressive! I would not have expected such a converter to have been found for a long time (and certainly not this cheaply). One of the gliders can be moved to make this less obtrusive, and allow its use in many situations where one side the modified pattern protrudes beyond the lane the barber-pole is in on one side, but not the other.

A more expensive variant that allows protrusion on both sides:

Oops! Thanks for catching this. I pasted in the "add left-pointing ship from above" template instead of the "add left-pointing ship from above w/boat bit" template that I normally use in such cases. When doing an assembly-line modification of around 150 syntheses in a row, I frequently make minor slip-ups. I catch most of them when they don't run correctly. Unfortunately, running a synthesis to completion assures correctness, but not optimum path - in much the same way that a spell checker doesn't assure proper grammar, or a grammar checker doesn't assure proper semantics.

Not a new object, but a fourth occurrence of 68P32.1 just.. uh, occurred in D4_+1. (This is one of my hauls. The first occurrence was also mine; the third's thunk's, I'm not sure about the second one, I only know that was not mine.)

According to the LifeWiki, the best known synthesis uses 37 gliders. Can any of the following soups be used to improve this?

Oh, I didn't know! I'd also checked Mark Niemiec's site to be sure, but he also listed it as 37 gliders, so I assumed that really was the best.
