Wow! Very impressive! I would not have expected such a converter to have been found for a long time (and certainly not this cheaply). One of the gliders can be moved to make this less obtrusive, and allow its use in many situations where one side the modified pattern protrudes beyond the lane the barber-pole is in on one side, but not the other.

A more expensive variant that allows protrusion on both sides:

This yields this 24-glider un-optimized brute-force synthesis. I'm sure the cleanup can be greatly improved.
(It also trivially yields the two related 17- and 18-bit ones from 28 and 32 respectively via pole-extension).
