Soup search results

Postby codeholic » September 15th, 2014, 4:09 pm

As suggested by dvgrn, I open a new thread for soup search results.

I'd like to start the thread with a nice figure 8 synthesis.
x = 14, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

I'll see your three pulsars, and raise you one:

This wouldn't be so surprising ordinarily -- there are over 21,000 pulsar recipes just so far in my latest apgsearch run, and I bet there are quite a few more binary systems. But these two both showed up in the same soup...!

A beacon crystalizes a "Multum in Parvo" into an induction coil. (Edit: My mistake;;; It's just a tl and a teardrop making an unnamed meth slightly different from a "multum in parvo")
x = 25, y = 18, rule = B3/S23

A pulsar with a boat makes a HWSS with some junk. With a correctly-placed block, it is downgraded to a LWSS.
x = 11, y = 40, rule = B3/S23

Probably just previously-known, unsure discoveries.

It seems like it's the case that every combination of two interacting xWSSes that is a spaceship is 'natural', but that leads me to wonder which ones of those are the most common.

I've been doing some multi-day searches on a spare quad-core machine, with the faint hope of straining some new Life form out of the soup -- a new puffer, maybe, or at least something really unlikely like a loafer that's never been seen escaping from random starting conditions before. No luck so far...!

Maybe not surprisingly, my highest-scoring soups so far have tended to settle into a symmetrical state. My only soup with a score of 50 so far has been this one, with bilaterally symmetric ash:

#C 50Me35796714 -- score=50
#C queen bee shuttle + pi -> MWSS on MWSS

The following soup's ash has rectangular symmetry, and the reaction is so simple that it seems vaguely possible that someone has run into it before:

Not strictly natural, because I found it by adding symmetry options to apgsearch, but this 2-engine switch-engine variation happened (the program calls it 'yl576_1_246_756156edd5c2c10ac5bc316e7c8f38ef'):

Did a 10M apgsearch run in Life and the highest score was 35--ten higher than the next-highest. The soup creates a mold and two LWSSs. Don't know if that's an unusual high score in apgsearch yet, so, here.

I like this one, because it suggests a neat 6-glider synthesis:
x = 19, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

o!

There is a remote possibility that the LoM + beehive combination could be synthesized with 3 gliders, but I won't hold my breath.

It manages to reduce the synthesis of unicycle to 18 gliders:
x = 60, y = 56, rule = B3/S23
