I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

Very cool Macbi. Can you point me to an automated way of finding the minimal parent pattern? I have an additional (300) 20x20 random patterns with lifespan 25K+ which I would like to compare visually.

Well I guess you could try every possible pattern within bounding box -1,-1,x+1,y+1 (where 0,0,x,y, are the positions of the original bounding box’s corners), if gen 1 of the tested pattern is the target, add it to the list of parents, and take the lowest population of those

Don't actually do that though.
A) I suspect only parents inside 20x20 are of interest
B) there are 2^400 possible patterns to evaluate.

There are several options for automated searching. Macbi probably used logic life search which is a python frontend to an SAT solver. This seems to be the current best search method for predecessor searching. LLS has an option to set a maximum population, so the search won't be completely automated - you need to rerun the search with successively lower population bounds.

There are also GUI programs which can do these searches: "win life search" and "java life search". These are probably easier to use (particularly JLS which allows pasting rle patterns). For this size search I think they'll be quite a bit slower and you would likely need to take particular care with the search order to get a result in a reasonable time
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Here's a 20x20 pattern that shares its third generation with rliston's pattern's second generation. This means it has a lifespan of 39694 (no longer a pallendrome). Also, it's population is 140, but I'm pretty certain it can still be lowered. I found it with LLS:

If this new methuselah was found after searching only 23 billion soups then it shouldn't take long at all for the new apgsearch to find a new record. If I'm reading the charts correctly, the Catagolue receives more than that many soups every day.

The charts are in objects, rather than soups -- 23 billion soups corresponds to about 500 billion objects.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Yes, assuming that 16x16 soups are as likely to yield methuselahs as 20x20 soups. (I expect that's not the case, but that the ratio of the probabilities is still relatively small.)

(Mine have, but I'm only searching D8_1 at the moment.)

And just to make this post a little less pointless, allow me to observe that D8_1 has not just surpassed 10 trillion objects but also overtaken b38s23/C1 and become the second most-searched rule/symmetry combination, in terms of total objects censused.

(I remember looking at the D8_1 census back in mid-2015 -- Catagolue was still largely fed by apgsearch 1.x at the time --, marveling at Beluchenko's p37 and p51, and thinking how unlikely I'd ever be to see either of those myself. The times, they are a-changin'...)

(Also, while editing this, I found a bug in LiveViewer: If you enter an invalid rule, you can't bring up the popup menu, which means you can't close the LifeViewer if it's taller than the screen; the only recourse is to click on a LifeViewer attached to another valid pattern on the page, and then close that).

EDIT: The above 18P2.395 synthesis can be cleaned up with 20 gilders, for a total of 48; I'm sure the cleanup can be improved.

Thanks for the pointers everyone. I am planning to minimize the (288) 25K+ lifespan patterns in https://github.com/rliston/life-soup/tr ... lif/r00i20 and visually look for symmetry or other regularizer to help narrow the search.
