Who, me? If Cthulhu had deigned to make an appearance a few months sooner, it looks like my conjecture would have lasted a lot longer. It's all because I kept forgetting to feed the shoggoth, no doubt.

The trigger sequence only needs two small active regions -- a Herschel plus a pre-honeyfarm or pre-traffic light -- but I guess I can see why it hasn't happened to turn up before now:

x = 29, y = 60, rule = B3/S23

bo$24b2o$24b2o$24b2o$21bo$21b2o$22bobo$22bo!

In general, it fits right in with my revised conjecture that new bit counts will appear whenever they darn well feel like it.

Also the likelihood that a new highest bit count will be odd rather than even seems to be heading gradually toward 50% (because as the bit-count goes up, the probability gradually decreases that a Big Enough(TM) empty space will be available for a Big Enough symmetric still life to stabilize, before something asymmetrical touches it and modifies it.)

Direct synthesis can reduce trans-Cthulu (and twin cis-Cthulhu) to 12 and 13 gliders respectively. Also, since the left side starts out stable, it's very easy to modify the starting pseudo-still-life configuration to create any number of larger forms, such as 16 with 1-2 loaves and/or mangos (1 shown here), or even large absurdities like push-me-Cthulhus.

What exactly is a push-me-Cthulhu? Google returns zero results, and none of my offline resources help either... I think this might be an instant classic, though, in dire need of a Life Lexicon definition.

It's impressive that adjacent structures don't even have to be coordinated with each other, so you can adjust timings as needed to avoid glider collisions:

[Yes, the two-glider spark would be cheaper, but this was slightly easier to adjust.]

After I noticed that it was equally easy to create Cthulu's twin cis, the obvious pun quickly ran out of control and spawned several others (involving several different breeds (breads?) and mangled (mangoed?) forms), and when the two-headed version came up, one on pushme-pullyu was almost inevitable. I plead insanity. A wasted mind is a terrible thing.

Calcyman found a new natural variant of the glider-producing switch engine -- two overlapping switch engines, to be precise:

Thing is that the distinction between something arising in C1 and arising in another symmetry type is considered to be important, but at the same time it's still often considered as having 'appeared' if it shows up in any symmetry. It's just that it's considered to be a 'natural' appearance (as opposed to semi-natural) and thus more important if it shows up in C1.

I've been checking on that statistic for a couple of months now, I think -- it's been stuck at 611 out of 619 for a long time. At that rate, unless Catagolue recruits some significant new computing power, it's going to be years before the last 14-bit still life shows up.

At least we know that the soups are out there somewhere...!
