Interesting. If you change one of the four into a regular Unix you don't have to worry about closing the loop:

I created a 12-glider synthesis for the top one two years ago, which I dubbed "sesqui-unix", since it includes one full unix, and one partial one. Karel Suhajda reported it on June 7, 2007.
Since unices can be combined together in many ways, the possibilities are endless.

That is Karel Suhajda's P24. It can already be synthesized from 15 gliders (http://codercontest.com/mniemiec/lg/38p24ks.rle), but this synthesis is simpler, although the previous method starts with a pre-existing block, making it possible to synthesize two of these sharing the same block. It's also possible to connect two of these end-to-end, sharing two blocks, with a phase difference of 3-8 generations, but neither of these syntheses can do that. There's also unfortunately no way to share two blocks side-to-side.

Apparently a one-glider improvement on snake on eater with nose. Couldn't find it in the pentadecathlon catalogue, but Mark Niemiec's catalogue says the previous best was nine.

This is a common constellation, as it forms from 2 beehives. I know of 2 other ways to make it from 3 gliders. The first forms from a glider hitting a pre-traffic light, so it has two 3-glider forms (and many 4-glider ones).
