I have a silly question:
Is it worth to post pseudo still live synthesis here?

The wiki still lists 11 gliders as the cost of a caterer. Same with Mark Niemiec's new searchable database, which is in the final testing stages and will hopefully be back on the Web in a week or two. I don't think the previously posted soup allows for much of an improvement on that number.

Catagolue currently (21 February) lists exactly one source soup for a caterer, which allows for a trivial 8-glider synthesis:

Code: Select all
#C [[ THUMBNAIL THEME 6 AUTOSTART ZOOM 12 X -7 Y -7 GPS 15 LOOP 150 ]]
x = 42, y = 46, rule = B3/S23
o$b2o$2o14$18bo$16bobo$17b2o2$35bo$33b2o$34b2o7$40bo$18bo20bo$16bobo
20b3o$17b2o4$34b2o$34bobo$34bo5$14b2o16b2o$13bobo15bobo$15bo17bo!

I didn't check to see if the block could be replaced by a single glider -- somehow it didn't look likely.

I've been browsing through catagolue's life p2 objects, and there's only one occurrence of a griddle-type oscillator, and the inductor is a bit surprising. Here's the messy reduction I came up with:
x = 40, y = 46, rule = B3/S23

There's another one now, which seems similarly auspicious:

EDIT: ... but we have block on griddle in six gliders already from codeholic's post earlier in this thread.
Code: Select all
#C block on griddle, from apgsearch --
#C costs 12 gliders according to MDN's dataabase
x = 23, y = 28, rule = LifeHistory

A12.A$6.A$6.A4$21.2A$21.2A!
#C [[ THUMBNAIL AUTOSTART LOOP 150 ]]

If you open this in Golly, the red-marked cells are an attempt to get the pre-honeyfarm into place with an obvious reaction. But I doubt there's enough time to drop a loaf into place after the block is gone, and very likely there's a better way to make that spark anyway.

xs22_02596z69bp552 caught my eye on Catagolue this evening for some reason -- has it been collected already? It's one of those unlikely active reactions that suddenly freezes in place when it looks like it should keep moving. Looks like a dozen gliders, possibly one or two less (?)

Code: Select all
x = 37, y = 37, rule = B3/S23

#C [[ THUMBNAIL AUTOSTART THEME 0 GPS 8 X 12 Y -5 ZOOM 16 LOOP 90 ]]

All four of the current soups for this still life construct it in the same way, by bouncing an almost-pre-honeyfarm off a beehive.

Very funny (from my most recent 5M haul, the first 29-bit SL from asymmetric soup xs29_69e0u1u0e96zx23032):

I believe the latter can be made with nine gliders; would it be reducible to eight?

Ah, you've filled in the 29-bit gap and increased the upper limit to 32, all in one haul! I've been wondering when the first 29-bitter would show up in the online census.

This may be the last time that Catagolue shows a continuous range of still-life bit counts -- 4 bits to N bits, and everything in between. 33-bit still lifes, and odd-bit-count still lifes in general, are a lot rarer than even-bit-count ones... usually larger symmetric still lifes with even bit counts seem to show up and create new gaps, before all the smaller gaps get filled in.

Coe's p8 with max 8 gliders (no record, but this synthesis is probably more slow-salvo-friendly):
x = 27, y = 22, rule = B3/S23

But I guess, one can create the block and the hive with 3 gliders, then it would be a record.

Apparently Oddo–Harkins applies equally well in Conway's Life as it does with elemental abundances. This may be due to the prevalence of odd-width symmetric motifs (the central line is usually a no-man's land since cells cannot be born with said symmetry restrictions) having an even number of cells.

I dunno; ask Seeds of Destruction.

I can't come up with a good "what does the fox say" joke right now, so let's be plain: calcyman found a fox. I don't recall it being a natural object in any search done before now.

Here's the soup:

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

4bo2b6obo!

Here's the reaction, involving some junk, with an extra glider to show off the fox. EDIT: Replaced with a 2-glider cleanup. The two blocks (you'll have to pause the viewer to spot the left one) can be made in three gliders. If the junk can be made in 4 gliders, this is a 10-glider synthesis.

Code: Select all
#C [[ THUMBNAIL AUTOSTART ZOOM 8 LOOP 100 ]]
x = 27, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

I found a 3 glider synthesis for the junk. Unfortunately it seems to be incompatible with the pi to the NW. Also I found a single glider clean up for the whole thing. In the pattern below you need to somehow make a pi at the red location at generation 40 but I couldn't manage it.

I forgot to post this when I composed this with the help of Grant:

possibly a cheaper cleanup with the same # of catalysts:
and an almost-cleanup if you remove the last block.
