With apologies in advance: I'm hoping I can convince you to take up another line of research besides p4 oscillators. Failing that, of course, I can just stop looking at them... but it might be better if they at least went in an "unsure" thread, not in a "Discoveries" thread. It's always terribly tempting to have a quick look and see if maybe this one will be something new.

At p4, it's really really easy to waste time finding things that other people have found before. Nicolay Beluchenko did a lot of searching along these lines, about a decade ago, and if I remember right, Jason Summers stopped collecting p4 oscillators after a while, because there were so many that it was impossible to keep the stamp collection up to date.

If you want to make a systematic collection of p4 rotors and keep it updated, that's one thing... but I'm afraid that hopeful p4 searching and posting results in ones and twos, without even bothering to check the existing collection, is pretty much guaranteed to just generate a lot of noise.

Yikes! Yes, with p28 oscillating fenceposts, it's certainly theoretically possible... but there's a long list of very difficult problems that we'll be able to solve easily, long before we'll have much hope of solving this one.

Things like "find the smallest true p14 gun" -- some oscillator-like thing that just happens to spit out a glider every 14 ticks - would be trivial by comparison. It's not just that period 28 is twice as difficult as period 14 -- it's more like each period N+1 is a hundred or a thousand times more difficult than period N.

So the support for this "sidewick" that's maybe most likely to be found would be in the form of an extensible c/9 spaceship. Every nine ticks the wick's pattern is offset by one cell from its T=0 state. c/9 searches are still very hard, but c/28 searches are gazillions of times harder -- at least with any search method that anyone has figured out so far.

It's not possible. Observe:

None of the blue cells or red cells can be turned on at generation 0, because they would kill one of the green cells in generation 2. However, the red cells come on at generation 1 without something to suppress them. The only way to prevent this is to turn on these:

...but that just causes the red cells to turn on at generation 2 instead. So there are no options.

I seem to recall that you'll find a lot of these in the p2 section of Koenig's Object Database. Probably all the likely simple junctions have been enumerated before, starting several decades ago, but it would take some digging to be absolutely sure. Another type of barberpole connection shows up under the 106-bit page, but not the exact pattern you asked about. The 88-bit version doesn't appear either. But really that only means that that particular pattern didn't happen to get added to the database, not that no one has ever found that junction before.

Some years ago Nicolay Beluchenko also wrote a series of articles under the title "Oscichemistry". The Java applets have since been suppressed as a security hazard, so the articles should be re-done with embedded LifeViewers these days -- but you can still copy out the bitmap images and paste them into Golly if you're interested. I had a 22 glider synthesis of this as early as 1999 (see: http://codercontest.com/mniemiec/p4.htm#p4-lg). I'm sure the oscillator was known much earlier than that. Here are a couple of other ways of stabilizing it:
