Here is a period 644 oscillator which demonstrates an interesting old reaction.

bobboo$26boo3boo!
The reaction is an input glider hitting three blocks arranged in the corners of a rectangle, resulting in an output glider and the same arrangement of three blocks (but flipped). The oscillator performs the reaction twice during each period.

Moving pairs of the snarks further away can increase the period by any multiple of 8. The period can be reduced to 628 if the eaters of some pairs of snarks are welded together.

Oscillators using the reaction were possible before, but using snarks makes it simpler and smaller. (It is fortunate that the input and output gliders of the reaction have the same color, otherwise larger glider reflectors would have been needed.)

Can someone please tell me who found the reaction and when? Thanks.

One such (comparatively quite bulky) oscillator can be found in Jason Summers' pattern collection, and the RLE notes credit the original reaction to Paul Callahan —

Here is a period 92 glider gun using my period 46 glider gun and a period 4 oscillator.

The domino spark produced by the p4 oscillator inhibits every other output glider. Other period sparkers might work similarly to create occasional holes in the stream.

My collection is very old so there might be a smaller p4 sparker that works here.

This is the first p30 or p46 gun I know of where a p4 oscillator can successfully thin its stream.

The spark on Tanner's period 46 oscillator is very similar to the one on the period 15 pentadecathlon, so it can perturb things in similar ways. For example, it can reflect a glider by 180 degrees in the same way.

So you can create a glider relay between these two oscillators (but the separation is pretty large).

Code: Select all

x = 209, y = 182

The new period 46 edge-shooter glider gun can work as an in-line inverter.

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 49
20boo$20bo$14booboobo$13bobobobo$13bo4bo13bo$12boo16b3o$8boo19bo$9bo

$9bo$6b3o$6bo10$bboo$3boo$bbo!
Here it is used with a period 138 2-on 1-off glider stream in order to create a regular period 138 glider gun. (A large period 6 oscillator deletes every third internal glider.)

Code: Select all

x = 61, y = 54

However, this is getting pretty large. Perhaps there is a period tripling reaction for two crossing p46 glider streams.

For period tripling these days it's going to be hard to beat a tremi-Snark, but even that's not quite enough to improve on the existing p138 gun using Gabriel's p138:

I don't remember finding that block reaction. July '94 actually predates when I made gencols available (Dec '94) so I am not sure what I was using. I do remember trying out triples of blocks looking for a stable reflector, but I don't remember posting anything about it. Assuming the attribution is accurate, where is it from? (Maybe comp.theory.cell-automata? I don't think I was on the early Life list at this point either). Anyway, nice to see something working with it.

I can't find it in comp.theory.cell-automata on Google groups. Any other source for this?

Apparently you were indeed looking for a stable reflector at the time. Maybe the following will jog your memory. There's a boat-plus-four-eaters reaction in there that's pretty interesting -- if the return glider had been just one lane over, it would have connected nicely to a Herschel receiver/boojum reflector/rectifier. That's the second code block below, and the third code block is the three-block reaction:

Thanks! that does help. I am now pretty sure I remember being disappointed that the 3-block catalyst only shifts and does not reflect the glider, and I don't know if I ever tried to do anything else with it.

The following interesting oscillator showed up in a soup 2 days ago. Its core is supported by 4 mutated molds: http://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp4 ... 0111/b3s23
It forms from four mutated bakery predecessors surrounding an interchange predecessor, so it might be easy to synthesize:

I found an old period 160 glider duplicator reaction in my files which used period 8 reflectors to support the reaction in a loop. Unfortunately, the duplicated gliders are on a close path to the others, and so usually have to be deleted.

I upgraded the reaction to use snarks instead of the reflectors, and this is shown here. Also, for a bit of added interest, I used some of the extra gliders for kickbacks to make a period 640 glider relay.
The separation of the two halfs can be adjusted by multiples of 40 cells to change the size and period of the relay.

Code: Select all

#C Period 640 glider relay built using two period 160 glider duplication
#C reactions and snarks. This is based on a previous version which
#C used period 8 reflectors instead.

Previously, I managed to build a glider gun from the glider duplicating reaction by adding a pi heptomino glider reflecting reaction to extract the inconvenient extra gliders. This is shown below, and also shows how the p8 reflectors were used.

To make a modern version of this without any foreign oscillators, snarks can probably be used to eliminate all the p8 reflectors, and a catalyst can eliminate the period 5 sparker, but I don't see offhand
how to avoid the p8 blocker.

I'm just posting to acknowledge Tanner Jacobi's stable support of the p130 engine and new T-nose variants. This is primarily for record keeping.

At http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Oscillator the 106P135 (http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/106P135) is listed as smallest p135 oscillator. I know this is out of the common area of interest - and the 106P135 is nice, but the fumarole on 56P27 is non-trivial and smaller with only 74 cells:

Code: Select all

EDIT1:
Similarly for p80, 122p80.1 is listed as smallest (http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/122P80.1), but we have
the fumarole on Rich's p16 which has only 52 cells:

Nice!
Following that here's a PD on Rich p16 which gives p240 with an interesting reaction a few gens later.

Interesting. I hadn't tried different geometries; I just cloned the P80 and replaced the fumarole with a pentadecathlon to make the P240 (an its synthesis works for this one too, just by moving the pentadecathlon gliders one space). Sadly, this unusual spark trick doesn't work with a fumarole.
I hadn't seen the smileys either. There seem to be two ways smileys can share sparks, although I don't see how to synthesize either one of them, as none of the known smiley syntheses edge shoot one. Smiley+pentadecathlon also works, for a true P120.

A new minimal 74p78:

Code: Select all

which is T-nosed p6 on 34P13.

I also found two unusual combinations of Rich's p16:

Code: Select all

The sparks are not as special as for the PD on Rich p16, still nice. And I am not sure, but maybe some weird combination of such p16 (and p8) oscillators and maybe a few still lifes could even give us a p16 gun.

A true P16 would be nice, but a reaction would have to be very tight to be able to create gliders that close together without interfering with the previous gliders.

I just noticed that http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Talk:Oscillator lists some of the recent 'founds' like the p135:

When looking at the 61p78: It is a period 6 oscillator on 34p13, but I have never seen this oscillator before, does this

That p6 been described as a "p6 thumb" before, but I don't think it has a name. It's in the gun collection in a few places where p6 sparkers are needed, because it's the best option for squeezing the bounding box. The p72 gun is a good example:

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 36, rule = LifeHistory
