Yes! Name it um what about um Pi fountain? Pi remaker? Pi chef (eaters)?
Also, a p690 osc

How about Phircle? (The "phi" part references the phi spark, and the "-ircle" part references a circle, or 2π radians; the pi heptomino appears twice in the oscillator's period.)

Code: Select all

I've written it up as Tanner's p46 for now -- since Tanner discovered it, I think he should have the honor of naming it. The wiki article can be moved as appropriate.

Horray! The second pattern discovered this year that gets it's own wiki page!
We need more patterns!! Kazyan, how was this found?

Keep it as Tanner's p46; that seems to be the convention for these smallish but unusual oscillators (and, quite an honor, personally). If it becomes useful enough in the next few days that my name will be all over p46 technology where it doesn't need to be, we'll rename it.

Excellent. Yes, between Rich's and Achim's and Coe's and Silver's and Gabriel's and Merzenich's et al. oscillators, "Tanner's p46" is a good fit. (FWIW, personally I think there's no reason to rename it if it starts seeing wider use either; credit where credit is due, after all.)

I've added RLE files to the article -- didn't want to do so until the name was decided, since RLE files can't be renamed and I wanted to avoid the hassles of deleting and reuploading them after a name change.

This version with an eater has a slightly smaller bounding box:

42-cell variant using a block to suppress the spark:

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 24, rule = B3/S23

Not really that interesting, honestly.

Oh god, this generates more possibilities! (Since I'm the type of type of guy who has to look at every possibility, you can imagine how my sanity must feel.)

EDIT: Changing the other snake to an eater as well results in a slightly more tucked-in form:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 13, rule = B3/S23

I believe it's possible that a gun might exist along these lines, with one osc's phi spark replacing the right-hand catalyst of the other:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 42, rule = B3/S23
17b2o$17bo$15bobo$11b2o2b2o$11b2o7$22bo$10b3o7b3o$9bo2bo6bo$8bo9bobo$

19bo$22b3o$10bo13bo$4b2obobobo$4bob2ob2obo$12bo$12b2o!
Gencols did not give me anything -- but gencols historically hasn't played nice with me (and/or I just haven't figured out how to use it) so I'm not sure I can trust my result. Could anyone else check?

As a side note, there are also plenty of non-gun oscillators following this setup, including the following.

Nice! Looks like it won't be possible to improve on the old 49*16 two-twin-bees gun, though, at least if we go by bounding box as usual... unless, just possibly, there's a Bellman catalyst or some such that can convert a single oscillator's phi spark into a glider.

EDIT: Sneaking in a celebratory HWSS gun here based on Kazyan's discovery above and Sokwe's discovery below, because it's not really interesting enough to get its own post:

Very nice! It yields these three other gun by turning around one or both oscillators, but that's a trivial observation on my behalf:

I'd bet more on a lucky p4/6/8 sparker interacting in just the right way to make a p92/138/184. Speaking of p138, maybe try rubbing Gabriel's p138 up on it.

I tried a non-exhaustive manual search for something p4 or p6 earlier, but the only thing that came up was a p6 placement that released a glider on one cycle but blew up the next. It's possible there's something that works among the arrangements that I didn't try, or that there's a p8 or 138 placement that would work, or even a transparent catalysis -- I looked preliminarily at that option earlier and didn't find anything, but my manual search was shallow and nowhere near exhaustive.

Do we need another wiki page? Matthias' Torpedo Launcher?
Also, is this the FIRST GLIDERLESS MWSS GUN??

None of the guns should get their own pages. They should instead be included in the gallery on the page for the oscillator.

Wow... Congrats for Kazyan and Sokwe! Isn't this a new record for the smallest *WSS gun?

Compatible rules are: B3/S23 - B34e8/S234c6i8. Sorry to cut&paste the full pattern, but this belongs to my favourite patterns from now! Even new banners, displays are possible with smaller elements using the above component.

Congrats to Sokwe et al, jolly astounding!

Nice work Kazyan and Sokwe!

@Kazyan this is the second time recently (out of many more times), that a discovery of yours has sparked a lot of discussion and discoveries!

I spent a long time applying many tricks to try and reduce the synthesis from 19 gliders without success. The trick that got the closest was making the carrier/snake + junk in 3 gliders, and using the junk + 2 gliders to make a pi.This is one of the close calls (the reaction was found with gencols):

Code: Select all

x = 44, y = 14, rule = B3/S23
40bo$38bobo$o38b2o$3o11bo$3bo8bobo26b3o$2b2o9b2o28bo$42bo$22b2o$3b2o
17bo2bo$3b2o9b2o8b2o11b2o$13bobo3bo16bobo$15bo2bobo17bo$18bobo$19bo!
A general method I tried that someone else might be able to get to work, is to use one glider to collide with the junk and create a spark which reacts with another glider to create the pi in the right spot:

Code: Select all

x = 72, y = 35, rule = B3/S23
11b2o38b2o$12bo39bo$12bob2ob2obo31bob2ob2obo$13bobobob2o32bobobob2o$o
13bo25bo13bo$3o37b3o$3bo39bo$2b2o38b2o$13bo$14b2o6b2obo$3b2o8b2o7bob2o
17b2o$3b2o38b2o$15bo$55b2o2b2o$56b2obobo$55bo3bo17$70bo$69b2o$69bobo!
The block can also be replaced with a few different 2G constellations for no extra cost.
Can anyone else reduce the synthesis?

Smallest phase for gun (not including ships produced)

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 29, rule = B3/S23

EDIT: The chain of ships can act as a wick, destroying the gun and leaving tons of periodic ash:
