I do like Freywa's name for the oscillator though, so - as a proposal to the community, and given that the oscillator does not seem to have been named anything else by Tanner - how about we make it official?

Do you mean the stable version or the original version with blockers that was found by Wainwright in 1990?

Speaking of names, Roseluck is of course the My Little Pony character – besides Rainbow Dash, the only truly notable one beginning with the letter R. There's another influence: a few hours before I posted the stable oscillator I was watching the Pac-12 championship game. The winner of that game (the Washington Huskies) would go to the Rose Bowl.

I still haven't quite figured out how to make 1x3, 1x4, 2x3, 3x3, 3x4, 4x4, and larger arrays of scrubbers. These would need ways to trigger ways to ignite still-lifes into pulsars, and/or edge-shoot pulsars point-first. (I know many pulsar syntheses, but most of them are from 3 gliders, and not useful here.)

The only possible improvement might be finding a 3G synthesis for the two original pi's — they form from a twin hat predecessor except without deleting the opposite blinker of the TL, but the only 4G twin hat I know of has a more complex mechanism.

I searched the database of 3G collisions, but did not find anything for the two pi's. It seems this is minimal, unless there magically is a 3G collision that does this that is not in the database.
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

There are a lot of ways of doing that with two gliders, and since a LOM takes two gliders to make, it's just one of them.

Re: Synthesising Oscillators

It's pretty nice that my synthesis for 50P35 that opened this thread is now listed on the relevant LifeWiki page. Having seen the current smallest p35, the honey farm hassler, I made a 19-glider synthesis:

Code: Select all

You can't make both boats from two gliders each because one pair of gliders would careen into each other in the middle (or one glider would hit a boat). The 3G synthesis of block + honey farm was found from Goldtiger's database.

It definitely isn't on the wiki yet…

However, coming up with the reduced synthesis above did help me get up to speed with the components database and clock insertion.

You can save two gliders by making the boats first. You can also edge-shoot the carrier. Since it normally takes 1 glider to clean up the spurious beehive and two more to add a block, it might be possible to do both simultaneously with 1 or 2 gliders, saving 4 or 2 more, respectively.

This is what happens when several people are both active on the same topic at the same time. You posted your first synthesis. I started adapting it to my database format, and found the optimization. When I went to add it to the database, I noticed there was always a 10 glider one. When I tried to post both, your 22-glider edit showed up. In between my noticing your edit and my posting mine, Sokwe made his comment.

Wait, where is your (up-to-date) database again? The links on LifeWiki apparently refer to the one which you stopped updating in 2015.

I haven't updated the online one yet, but I have been continuously updating my local copy, and have made many improvements and additions, and added many syntheses that have been posted here. Hopefully, I'll have it in a state ready for publication some time this year (and I intend to keep it in a maintainable state, so updates won't be so sporadic - before the 2015 version, the previous version was in 1999!)

That Chris Cain's 24P10 synthesis had to be brought up made me do quite a lot. Several syntheses are not mentioned on LifeWiki, perhaps because they were made before recording such syntheses became common. Furthermore, apgsearch has led to drastic improvements in many, many syntheses (look at X66 for an example: 166 gliders to 13).

The attachment to this post contains all syntheses of oscillators with LifeWiki pages in this thread before the start of 2014 that are not on LifeWiki and which have not been superseded by later substantial improvements. However, because incremental improvements can take time, I've only zipped up the most efficient complete synthesis of the objects chosen. A view to finding any further improvements and then creating the relevant synthesis files on LifeWiki is taken.

As can be opined from the year, there is a real rabbit hole which I have only just gazed into. I strongly encourage you to continue where I left off.

Re: Synthesising Oscillators

Freywa wrote:The attachment to this post contains all syntheses of oscillators with LifeWiki pages in this thread before the start of 2014 that are not on LifeWiki and which have not been superseded by later substantial improvements. However, because incremental improvements can take time, I've only zipped up the most efficient complete synthesis of the objects chosen. A view to finding any further improvements and then creating the relevant synthesis files on LifeWiki is taken.
Thanks for doing this. I've uploaded the two p37s manually to the LifeWiki, but the process is fairly time-consuming so I won't continue immediately. Maybe the rest could be done via the auto-upload script.

The 44-glider synthesis for Beluchenko's other p37 was actually improved to 40 gliders a few posts down, so I've manually added that synthesis and an extra link to the _synth file.

It looks like the comments are pretty good on all the attached files already, so they can be added as they are to the RLE namespace, and the auto-upload script will take care of (almost) everything from there. I've added the synth pattern for 56p27 as an example. Basically the idea is just to type "RLE:56p27_synth" (pname all lowercase, with "_synth" appended) into the LifeWiki search bar, create the file, and paste in the text from the attachment:

http://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?title ... ction=edit

Then it's just a matter of going to the 53P27 article and adding the following after "rle = true" in the infobox parameters:

Code: Select all

|synthesis = 52
|synthesisRLE = true
More Stuff That Needs Doing
If anyone would like to volunteer to do the above RLE namespace edits for the remaining 21 files in the attachment, that would be great. The auto-upload script would then
  • automatically create an RLE file with the correct name, 46p27_synth.rle, ready for upload;
    automatically add a #N header line to the RLE -- #N 56p27_synth.rle, in this case;
  • automatically add a comment with a link to the LifeWiki article for the pattern being synthesized.
  • automatically add a comment with a link to where this same RLE file will be stored on the LifeWiki server.
When there are a lot of these auto-created pattern or synth files, they can be sent to Nathaniel to do a bulk upload. However, now that the auto-upload script is close to being caught up and there aren't hundreds of files to handle, it's fairly easy for any LifeWiki moderator to run quickly through a folder of a few dozen new uploadable files and drop them onto the server one by one (the only available method for non-Nathaniels).

I wrote the auto-upload script just because it ends up being enormously more time-consuming if every file has to be hand-edited, renamed, gliders counted, etc. before the upload happens. All that tedious work ends up being a task to be avoided at all costs -- which is presumably why nobody has done it in a lot of cases, and synthesis files have fallen this far behind current reality.

Room for Improvement
One downside is that adding "synthesisRLE = true" is a temporary lie: the file won't actually be there on the server until the next time the auto-upload script is run. To me it seems easier to do the editing just once when the synth pattern is added to the RLE namespace, and allow reality to lag behind the promise a little bit.

-- I do admit that that's a bit suboptimal, though. Would it be preferable if the auto-upload script created a report of all the cases where rle=true or synthesisRLE=true tags are missing from the articles, so that someone could go through and do those updates systematically later?

Currently the auto-upload system doesn't pay attention to "rle = true" or "synthesis = true" or "plaintext = true" tags -- it just checks for pattern, _synth, and .cells files on the server, and creates any missing files that it can figure out how to create using whatever is in the RLE namespace. It could easily make a list of articles that will need any of the above parameters added to them, once the auto-upload process is complete.

The system is currently conservative about uploads; it doesn't prepare a pattern or synth file for upload if there's a file already uploaded. So no files on the server will ever be automatically overwritten. This wouldn't change with the proposed adjustment to the script.

Any other suggestions, comments or complaints on the current (evolving) status quo for synthesis uploads?

TL;DR: Adding latest-and-greatest synthesis patterns to the RLE namespace -- especially with reference names, dates, URLs and glider counts in the comments -- is now a good step forward in getting the LifeWiki up to date on known syntheses. Maybe it can become a bigger step forward with the next iteration of the auto-upload script.

As discussed elsewhere, it doesn't seem to make sense at this point to use Mark Niemiec's 2015 synthesis database as a source for patterns to be uploaded to the LifeWiki. It's just a bit too likely that the newest cheapest synthesis won't be there, but it will hopefully be in the upcoming 2019 release.

I wasn't aware there had been a 166-glider one. Do you have a reference to it? I'd be curious to see it, for historical reasons.

Thanks for these!
I didn't have the improved 15-glider 21-bit hooks w/snake (my synthesis took 17 gliders).
For some reason, I didn't have 105p60; that one also doesn't seem to have a LifeWiki page.
I had syntheses but incorrect attributions for 56p60, 60p33, 66p90, 68p40, 74p30.

On 2013-10-10, Matthias reduced the base p30 prepulsar shuttle synthesis which reduces 84p47 and 204p47

You are missing this reduced 56p27: 20 gliders by 27182818 2017-11-12
I also have an improved 132p37 from 40 gliders from 2013-05-23

Here are those syntheses after that reduction. For 204P47 I know that kickbacks of some sort have to be used for the second 84P47 but I'm too tired right now to implement them.

x66 is now doable in 12 gliders, per this 2018 post from 2718281828:

Martin Grant's original x66 synthesis can be found here. By my count it is 162 gliders (153 pure gliders, 2 LWSSs and 1 MWSS) – contrary to what LifeWiki says (166) and Martin's own count (146):

I wasn't aware there had been a 166-glider one. Do you have a reference to it? I'd be curious to see it, for historical reasons.
Even that information is a bit out of date; there's a 12-glider synthesis now.

Here's Extrementhusiast's original 166-glider synthesis -- except the post says it's 146 gliders. That's clearly not right, but I don't know whether 166 is the right number either -- I can only find 162 gliders in that initial incremental synthesis. Anyone want to build a continuous synthesis and make sure?

EDIT: Oops, duplicate information, please disregard. I started this message earlier in the day before Freywa's post above, then got sidetracked adding all the same information to the LifeWiki article. For some reason I don't always seem to get the "someone else has posted" notification when I submit a message, or at least I don't see it. I wonder if maybe that warning doesn't show up properly if one of those "submission was invalid" messages appears instead, when too much time has passed?
