When posting "something interesting", please include a short description of what makes it interesting. I look at that RLE and see nothing interesting, because I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking for.

is an example of a pattern which gives a temporary glider producing switch engine that lives for quite a while until it gets destroyed by a glider. There might be some pattern that release at the beginning an infinite growth switch engine, which moves quite far away from the reaction centre, and after a couple of thousand (say 30k) ticks a glider is released from the reaction centre that kills the switch engine (and sends gliders back to the centre). As the glider requires some time to reach the switch engine and the kick-back glider again has to travel this distance this might extend the life time of a pattern substantially.

Nick Gotts has created numerous long-lived patterns using a similar principle, of puffers which eventually get stopped because of a spaceship from their output catching up to them.

Hello. Newbie here, no expert on Life, just enjoy watching stuff evolve without really understanding it!

I was just playing around with the rule B367/S245, starting from random fills, and I noticed that this long-period oscillator crops up very frequently:

Looks a bit like a queen bee (without stabilising blocks), period 168 if I've counted correctly. Is this known about, and if so does it have a name? Just interested.

You are correct on the oscillator's period, but I checked Catagolue and it has 1.4 million sample soups it has appeared in, and it goes by the name of xp168_6ff.

(By the way, do you have Golly? There is a script included with it called "oscar" that can find a spaceship's or oscillator's period, so you don't have to do it yourself)

Thanks guys for the info. Yes I do have Golly (wish it had a different name though :? ) - but I certainly haven't learnt all its clever stuff yet! Also the simpler and less sophisticated Life32. I use them to play around with random patterns, hoping 'something will turn up'.

Anyway it wasn't too hard to home in on the period of this little creature...

I'm not likely to hit upon anything groundbreaking in Conway's default B3/S23, which hasn't been discussed already - it's been so thoroughly researched! I'll leave that to the experts. But if I do - and there's any chance it's original - I'll be back...
