I'll post a separate LifeHistory pattern for period doublers, triplers, quadruplers, and quintuplers. Reply to this thread if you know of other reasonably efficient period multipliers that are missing from these collections, and I'll edit the patterns here to include them. I know I don't have Paul Callahan's stable glider-to-Herschel-converter doubler -- will add that shortly.

Some of the larger multipliers are obsolete for most purposes. They're included mostly for the sake of (semi-) completeness.

What follows is my rambling on adding catalysts to ptbsearch.

I think this particular catalyst might be a good candidate to add to ptbsearch. Here is another (useless) example of this reaction that I found a while ago:

Obviously, this catalyst is closely related to the pi turner in gourmet. The advantage to this catalyst over the gourmet catalyst is that it works essentially the same way even when flipped as in the pattern above. This means that only 4 orientations need to be added to the catalyst file, rather than the normal 8 for asymmetric catalysts.

Another catalyst that might be good to add to ptbsearch is a table on table. Due to its symmetry, only two orientations need to be added. Here's an example of a table reaction:

Similar to the table on table, the dead spark coil can be useful and only needs two orientations. This catalyst features prominently in Paul Callahan's Herschel transmitter:
`x = 19, y = 20, rule = B3/S232b2ob2o\$2bo3bo\$3b3o2\$3b3o\$2bo3bo6bo\$2b2ob2o6b3o\$13bobo\$15bo3\$2obo\$ob2o4\$15b2o\$15bo\$16b3o\$18bo!`

Since it has not been commonly used in stable circuitry, I think I should also mention the ship. It is obviously easy to construct, so ship reactions could be useful in self-constructing circuitry. I think the best way to define the ship catalyst is to have 4 orientations where only the 'point' on one end of the ship is fixed. Unfortunately, this can slow down searches a bit since the ship then acts almost like a transparent catalyst. To see what I mean, consider this B-to-glider converter:
`x = 21, y = 31, rule = B3/S237b2o11bo\$7bobo8b3o\$8b2o7bo\$17b2o5\$2o\$obo\$bo12\$2o14b2o\$2o14bobo\$18bo\$18b2o\$5bo\$4b3o\$3b2o2bo\$12b2o\$12b2o!`

Despite the slow down, I think adding the ship like this is worthwhile, since it seems that very little searching has been done using it. Obviously, Guam's incredibly small Herschel conduit proves the usefulness of the ship as a catalyst:

It might also be good to define the boat catalyst so that only the point is fixed, as would have been necessary to find the new p33 stabilization:

A very non-standard spartan catalyst that comes up quite a lot is this ship and eater combination:
`x = 7, y = 13, rule = B3/S23o\$3o\$3bo\$2b2o2\$5b2o\$4bobo\$4b2o2\$3bo\$b2o\$bo\$bo!`

This reaction occurs so frequently that I think it would be beneficial to add it as a separate catalyst.

I have also experimented with adding the following non-spartan catalysts with some success:

I guess with the semi-Snark around, H-to-G period quadruplers that need to be preceeded by conduit 1 or something similar aren't all that useful...

Nice find! Very clean and simple -- takes up much less space than previous quadruplers, though it's still not quite good enough to connect to an Fx77, Fx119, or R64. I've added it to the quadrupler stamp collection at the top of this thread.

Well, that depends. Seems as if this should set a few new records in the gun collection, if there's anywhere left that a spare Herschel gets generated and fed to an H-to-G. If you already have something like an F117 or L156 to connect to, then it's only necessary to add those two small still lifes.

Period quadruplers have played a big part in self-constructing circuitry lately, so maybe there's a use there somewhere. But the edge-shooting quadrupler might still win in that context.

As for the kiho park question, as it featured guns, if you're looking for gun constructed with period doublers, check out the universal gun script, that can construct any large period gun of logarithmic size.

Thanks for the reminder, and sorry I'm a little slow. Stephen Silver's original H-to-G collection included a period doubler based on H-to-G #2, and I noticed just in the last few days that it wasn't in the period doubler collection at the top of this thread. Should have patched it up while I was thinking about it.

I think the simplest version just moves one of the eaters in H-to-G #2 to a different place:
