Still life syntheses

Postby codeholic » May 9th, 2013, 4:54 pm

Hello, all,

It is written everywhere that David Buckingham has found glider syntheses for all still lifes up to 14 cells, but I couldn't find the full database in the Internet.

The best open database I could find is the one of Mark Niemiec, but it lists syntheses only for still lifes up to 13 cells, though it seems that he had the whole database, because he wrote here:
(NOTE: The glider syntheses for all these exist, and will be added to this web-page as time permits.)

There are also some still life syntheses on Dean Hickerson's site, but they are not so many and not classified.

Can anyone share something like Mark Niemiec's collection, but more complete?

Due to certain complications, my web site went down recently. I am currently working on finding a place to get it back up again, including many additional syntheses (the old page haven't been updated in over 12 years, and a lot has happened since then. Some of the things I've been reading on this site alone, just in the past few months, are quite astounding!).

Among other things, I have all of Dave Buckingham's syntheses of the 14-bit still-lifes, plus I've synthesized about half of the 15-bit ones (and I'm working on the rest, most of which are fairly trivial). Also, almost every category of objects has increased by at least one bit. I'm currently working on converting all the new syntheses into a coherent set of web-readable files.

Additionally, I've noticed that the pentadecathlon.com collection has a broken script, and will only show the first 100 in a set. To find the rest, you have to laboriously search through every possible ID number (from 101 to the maximum), instead of quickly glancing. I think I might e-mail the site owners/developers about the problem.

At least it's good to know that you're here!

Thanks. I had heard about this site some time ago, but only really became aware of the forums in the past week or so. I also just found your post about your improved synthesis of Coe's P8. Very impressive!

I also noticed the broken script. I remember that it used to work some time ago, but not recently. It's good to know that you can manually tweak the URL to get subsequent pages. I hadn't thought of that.

This is very good news! I'm looking forward to the new reincarnation of the site. Welcome aboard!

What are your requirements for the hosting?

By the way, is there a database of known slow-salvo syntheses anywhere?

The most extensive and systematic searches I know of in this area have been done by Paul Chapman, intermittently over the last several years. His "Glue" project is still something of a pre-alpha release, based on an old version of Smalltalk that doesn't run very well on modern OSes -- and without custom coding behind the scenes, it can only export one slow-salvo recipe at a time.

It's about time for me to get organized and post everything I've managed to collect so far, which is pretty much all Spartan still-life constructions (plus the loafer seed...) I have all sorts of eater recipes from an old Glue dump, and am slowly adding other recipes for edge-of-envelope small still lifes. Here's a mysterious table of eater recipes to whet your appetite:

It shouldn't be too hard to reconstruct these -- I'll publish a script soon that turns them into RLE directly, but in the meantime you just have to know 1) that the initial target is a block; 2) that lane numbers are symmetrical around 0, so you could get a mirror-image recipe by negating all the lane numbers; 3) that there are no even lanes... or rather, gliders can't travel on the even lanes, though mirror-symmetric diagonal spaceships could; and 4) you send an even-phase glider first, and after every comma, and an odd-phase glider after every semicolon. [EDIT: a draft of the script is now posted here. I've switched to a simpler format, where an 'E' prefix means an even-phase glider, and an 'O' prefix means odd-phase. The old comma/semicolon format still works, but is deprecated.]

My current project is to fold all of these recipes into my Spartan-circuitry compiler script, which so far can only really handle blocks. It's very good at shoving blocks around, though! The latest block-move table from Glue has 96,756 different recipes for up to 32 slow gliders, allowing block moves for pretty much everything (+/-100, +/-100). [EDIT: the full block-move table is posted here, with a sample of each block move here in a format compatible with my PC-lane salvo-builder script.]

Heinrich Koenig almost finished a p30 gun recipe, once upon a time -- you just have to synchronize the last two gliders. Turning this into a pure slow salvo would be a good practice project:

#C almost a "slow salvo" construction of a p30 gun --
#C the two final gliders must be synchronized

Nick Gotts came up with a fairly clean switch-engine recipe once upon a time:

Here's a slightly messier 25-glider switch engine:

Here's a 12-slow-glider version, but it's much messier. [I believe Glue has found very messy switch engines only six or seven gliders away from a block, but I've never seen a complete recipe.]

More coming soon, probably on the Geminoid Challenge thread, unless there's a better thread for slow-salvo recipes.

This is very good news! I'm looking forward to the new reincarnation of the site. Welcome aboard!

What are your requirements for the hosting?

By the way, is there a database of known slow-salvo syntheses anywhere?

Thanks! I'm not quite sure at the moment. The previous version of the site was mostly constructed by hand. With the size of the new one being much larger, much of the process has been automated, and the components are assembled using make (e.g. there are currently just under 500 postage-stamp images). I'm currently in the process of debugging the makefile, with the goal of having it generate a syntactically correct (even if not complete) web site image. Once that is working, I'll have a better idea of how big the whole thing will be. At present, it's all just "dumb web pages" with no smarts needed on the server side, although I can foresee certain future changes that would make it much more useful in future, that could make use of server-side scripting (for example, being able to search for patterns by pasting RLE fragments into a form).

As for slow salvo syntheses, that's never been something I have really had any expertise with, so I'll leave that one to the experts.
