So when's the 17-bit still life efficient synthesis project going to start?
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.
Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

I just left a pattern running accidentally for around an hour. At step 10^1, it got to generation 2,908,750 before I stopped it.

I accidentally left a large pattern in rule 90 (random noise, I think) running with hashlife in the background and then I ran out of RAM. It sucked.yeah this is the guys name wrote:I just left a pattern running accidentally for around an hour. At step 10^1, it got to generation 2,908,750 before I stopped it.

I had a computer that would freeze up completely and make the audio stutter if RAM usage went over around 3.2 GB out of 4. It was always so scary. I would eventually regain cursor control and be able to load up task manager, though.bleh wrote:I accidentally left a large pattern in rule 90 (random noise, I think) running with hashlife in the background and then I ran out of RAM. Although it had a virus (specifically some trash program called 'cpx.exe') that did that too so

Re: Random posts
Well I'm back after a 1 and 1/2 month break. The break was mostly triggered by my lack of access to a computer, but I think having a break was good anyway. There seem to have been several good discoveries in the fairly small period of time I was away, in particular the 2-engine cordership is very cool.
There also has been a lot of new and/or improved spaceship syntheses, which has opened up a lot of tempting and interesting opportunities for stable signal converters. However, dvgrn and chris_c seem to be working on something, so maybe I'll wait for a bit. In the meantime, I could work on a glider to spacerake converter I had done a tiny bit of work on in November.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year !

Welcome back! No need to wait, necessarily. There are a couple of complete adjustment toolkits to be tried out, one that starts with a quadruplicated signal and one that only needs a doubled signal.Goldtiger997 wrote:There also has been a lot of new and/or improved spaceship syntheses, which has opened up a lot of tempting and interesting opportunities for stable signal converters. I think there are probably a lot of improvements to be made to those first experiments. For example, in the final experimental loafer shotgun, the edge shooters could actually be moved farther apart from each other, giving another degree of adjustability. Might it be possible to use that adjustability as the "trombone slide", and get rid of the cluttery double-Snark ones in the crowded middle of the pattern?
For spaceship guns I think the semi-Snark adjustment toolkit will be particularly good for replacing pairs of signal-loop guns, each attached to its own edge shooter, with a single single-loop gun with two signals in it. If the gun is high-period enough it might be possible to get away with four signals coming from a single loop, as in the left side of this 2-engine Cordership gun.

Woah! Awesome! I wonder if there are any speed limit differences for these rules?

Re: Random posts
Note: I already posted some as edits in the Misc Disc in OCA thread. My hope was to fool some people who didn't check the rule before viewing the pattern into thinking that I had disproved the B2ce3ai speed limit.AforAmpere wrote:Woah! Awesome! I had previously believed that 3c/4 was likely the limit, but I found a 4c/5 one which I posted there. LLS is really useful for these B1e2c3i rules where manually finding ships would be nearly impossible.

Start at the beginning of the beginning and go to the next
After looking at the beginning, look at the last.
Go back to the beginning, but not the first. End your journey there.
Kneel, but don't give up, remember to write the first thing you see. Look up.
-----
Dip the spoon in tea. It sinks down to the bottom.
Now relax and end your struggles here.
Gulp down the tea. Notice how it goes down your throat.
Remember to write the first thing you see, now what's below the top?
Very good. But this spoon floats to the middle.
(In those 2 poems are the names of 2 people, 1 per poem)

Is it "dvgrn" in the second one? I'm not sure about the first one, though, I can't think of any users whose handles are anagrams of "sagk" or "sagek".Saka wrote:(In those 2 poems are the names of 2 people, 1 per poem)

The "G" at "Go back..." means that, if the first poem worked the same as the second one, the resultant name would be "sakga", not "saka", though.Majestas32 wrote:I believe it's saka
