Before posting here.

A brief summary:
Whichlife is an apgsearchable life-like rule which I selected for its lifelike feel, or, as I put it:

I wrote:It’s rather life-y, it doesn’t feel too easy, but it supports the G. It also supports the same small SLs and the blinker, but it still has a little different feel— there’s the occasional weird thing:

Personally, I like the feel of this rule— soups are surprisingly similar to life soups, save that:
There’s a lack of TLs (probably the most obvious problem)
Less gliders are emitted
Patterns don’t usually last as long (not very noticeable at all to me though, until I run that soup in life)
There are weird things.

Later, testiemqlstudop found this oscillator with the impressive apgcode xp34_69996269996

And done other things too— I made two pi eaters, both of which are loaves:

The search is underway, results here: http://catagolue.appspot.com/census/b2i ... tdin_WM_4G Unfortunately, there's no soups for quite a few of the very common small SLs. I think I can rectify that with a smaller search run, but to be honest I haven't actually investigated what exactly the criteria for "too common to store sample soups" is and where it is implemented. Edit: OK, it looks like Catagolue discards the sample soups when hauls are committed to the census, and it's based on frequency, so the smaller hauls didn't help. But this does mean that the sample soups are available in the hauls themselves, so just go directly to one of the hauls to find soups for any common SL with no stored soups. Fairly trivial, really. Just add another iterator and nest another loop. The only difficulty is in choosing the parameters of the 5th glider's placement. Currently I use three separate instances of the program to generate collisions from 2, 3, and 4 directions. It would probably make sense to add the 4th glider to the current 3 direction program.

But a few issues with this:

- Even though I'm running this search for a few new rules I believe the improvements I mentioned in the hacking apgsearch thread are needed to get greater benefit from running this type of search, especially if it's going to be expanded. It's just too awkward to find the good new syntheses as the search progresses.

- The current 4G search takes on the order of hours. Without changing the parameters of the first 4 iterators, adding the fifth G is going to multiply that by however many iterations of the 5th G placement there are (which for a reasonable 5G search would be on the order of hundreds at least.

I've been thinking about writing a version of hashsoup which allows an arbitrary number of gliders to be placed randomly. It would probably work similar to the blonksoup search, but only place gliders.

Edit: btw, the current 4Gcoll run in this rule is taking a fair bit longer because it's running on a laptop with throttled CPU and it has been going to sleep on me. It would be finished by now if I had run it on my desktop.
