Give it time, some soups just take a long time to stabilize in this rule. For instance, I just got this:

Code: Select all

[...]
b2ce3-ckn4einwyz5e6akns1e2c3aejq4knr5y6c/C1: 7010 soups completed (12.821 soups/second current, 2.115 overall).
Failed to detect periodic behaviour!
b2ce3-ckn4einwyz5e6akns1e2c3aejq4knr5y6c/C1: 7032 soups completed (0.005 soups/second current, 0.880 overall).
[...]
which means that one of those 22 soups in between took about 80 minutes to fully investigate (well, that, or there were two problematic soups each taking ~40 minutes, etc., but it seems more likely to me it was just one).

I tried B2ce4-cint67e8/S14567 (danny's battleship rule) in D2_+1, but my computer quickly got stuck. I was using the hacked apgsearch 1.x; maybe apgluxe but that is really complex to set up.

It's really just a matter of patience (and RAM; this searcher instance took up about 8 GB in the end). The following soup ended up yielding a grand total of 31 PATHOLOGICALs:

Code: Select all

B3-n4w/S23-r4qt is so nifty, sporting two speeds of replicators, multiple common spaceships including the c/4 ant and two 3c/6's, new puffers including a 8c/106 block puffer, a sparky semi-rare p23 that is probably gunnable, and much more. It seems so much more diverse than its S4q-deficient counterpart. Ill probably make a thread later with my discoveries.
EDIT: Recommended haul size is 1000000 due to the erratic nature of this rule's longevity.

B2-ak3j4nqy5a6cn/S12cei3aiq4ijnqrz5akr6-an is at 17 soups per second on average. Has a 3 cell knightship, an orthogonal xq12 and a diagonal xq8. Currently running C1.
Thanks Apple Bottom :D

Due to the relatively slow searches, there probably is a gun within a reasonable probability but to achieve the same number of equivalent soups as in other rules takes longer so it seems harder to find.

I was gonna say, thanks for the warning that the rule is that slow to search, but I think you mean "17 soups per second".

FWIW, D2_x is about 2-3x faster (~55 soups/sec for me, compared to ~21 for C1); D4_+2 OTOH is fairly slow, less than one soup/sec.

Probably because I recently searched /2/5 and /2/6, and noted that /2/4 was just trembling on the verge of being searchable. ;)

Yeah, 0/2/4 definitely won't work. I used to play around with it a lot, but it just gets too messy after a while as the common spiral-like objects crash into each other and dots, creating a lot of chaos. Otherwise, the rule is nice though, just not for soup searching. Example (for the explosive behaviour):

Code: Select all

x = 42, y = 24, rule = 0/2/4

Please someone apgsearch B2ei3aiq5eir6i/S12eik3ry4a6a8 , RAM usage gets quite high. Here's a p343 gun:

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 5, rule = B2ei3aiq5eir6i/S12eik3ry4a6a8
2o7bobo13bo$9bobo5b2o6bo$25bo$9bobo5b2o6bo$9bobo13bo!
It shoots this 24c/130 failed replicator:

It seems to shift speeds quite sporadically. Wickstrecher and related stuff:

I would be surprised if there wasn't enough stuff in this rule to make a thread.

Also catagolue has some very strange periods.

b2-a/S12-i3ij has a common p34 osc (as well as rare p20 and p49 oscs), and tiny c/6 diagonal, 3c/25 (p50) and c/21 (p42) orthogonal spaceships.

Currently apgsearching this rule: b2ce3a4cekqry5ajky6cs02aek3acjkn4-aeyz5-cjky6-ak78
It has the following interesting properties: a 3-cell c/12d, a S8-dependent wickstretcher and arbitrary-length spaceships based on a c/2 decomposition of the base of the wickstretcher. Rather slow to search but not explosive.
SoL : FreeElectronics : DeadlyEnemies : 6a-ite : Rule X3VI

B2ei3ein4-a5cer6-e7e8/S1c2e3-cer4a5-ein6-ei78, please. is self-inverse, has very satisfying growth out of soup, around 5 speeds of wickstrechers, and small spaceships. It's also not explosive, despite how long patterns on D2_+1 (and to a lesser extent D2_x) last.

Oh, and these 3 cells last 158,132 gens

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = B2ei3ein4-a5cer6-e7e8/S1c2e3-cer4a5-ein6-ei78
o$bo$2bo!
EDIT: This is the only odd period oscillator so far:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 3, rule = B2ei3ein4-a5cer6-e7e8/S1c2e3-cer4a5-ein6-ei78

Many (though not all) of those periods are the result of a family of oscillators, of which it seems the period can be arbitrarily extended simply by moving the end-pieces farther apart; hence, seemingly strange periods result from the end-pieces just happening to form a certain distance apart. It's possible that, with the addition of more soups for that rule, the list of periods could get very long indeed.

To make room for my academic life, I need to outsource all soup searching activities.

One rule I'd like to be apgsearched is this non-exploding B2a rule with a very small c/2 ship, B2a3er4ciw/S1c2c3e4t:
