How many rules have metacells similar to the 0E0P metacell?

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 3, rule = B3/S23

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 4, rule = B35/S234i8

3 I guess - Conway Life, Dominoplex and Einstein.

  1. The 0E0P metacell works in Conway's Life.
  2. The relation "is similar to" (defined on the set of all metacells) is reflexive; that is, every metacell is similar to itself.
  3. The 0E0P metacell works identically in infinitely many higher-range weighted cellular automata that do not affect the way the 0E0P metacell works at all, even though other reactions may happen differently. (Only finitely many of those CA can be practically implemented in Golly, though.)
  4. There are infinitely many cellular automata with a metacell similar to the 0E0P metacell.

In the Immigration rule, is there a color-changing glider reflector? Someone claimed to have posted one, but while it turns red to blue, blue remains blue and doesn't turn red. (Or whichever two colors are used.)

This is why I distinguish "color" and "colour", by the way.

There's this color changing reflector.

Nope — blue stays blue. It needs to change in both directions.

Isn't it sideways? The spaceships escape at +/- 90 degrees relative to the direction of the rake.

I thought about that, but sideways rakes don't really exist in Life, so I thought it doesn't have its own name.

Why do all INT Black/white reversible rules behave identically - forming large patches that gradually disappear?

This one doesn't have that behaviour:

Why do many rules have high-period traffic light oscillators?

You didn't give any examples. I assume that you mean cellular automata related to B3/S23 by a "small" change. If traffic light sequences remain common (e.g. due to forming in the same way) then the likelihood of getting a traffic light hassler in a hour of searching remains high.

However, consider cellular automata such as Just Friends (B2-a/S12), Day & Night (B3678/S34678) and Pedestrian Life (B38/S23).
