A domino can turn a Gc into a Ga. The conversion here is trivial.

Here is a series of adjustable period glider guns for Gc. Unfortunately they are nowhere near as adjustable as I was hoping for.

Code: Select all

#C Adjustable period glider gun for glider Gc in pre-x-rule

I thought that there was a similar gun in the rule x-rule-pre but I can't find it now. In any case, here is the key reaction. If another oscillator of small, even period which has the same spark can be found then the period adjustment would be much more flexible.

Code: Select all

Here is another mechanism to create an adjustable period gun - a 2Gc -> 4Gc reaction. Unfortunately the phase change of the reaction is different from that of the known reflectors which means that none of the reflectors I am aware of can maintain the reaction.

Hmm. Yep, that's quite a restriction, but still this is the first one of its kind, right? And this one you found seems to be newly found, right?

That's an odd adjustible period oscillator. I think this rule has the potential of omniperiodicity.

Thanks. Yes, I believe it's the first gun based on a duplicating reaction in this rule. I thought I had already posted the p41+8N oscillator but on review it seems I haven't until now.

Hmm, quite possibly. So far we have:

Code: Select all

Fixed oscillator periods:
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 19, 24, 25, 27

Adjustable oscillator periods:
6 + 8*n, n >= 0
41 + 8*n, n >= 0
(41 + 8*n)*8*m, n >= 0 and m >= 1

Various multiples of the known gun periods: p19 and p24 (depending on existence of requisite period multiplier)
Finding a Ga -> Gc conversion reaction which can be paired with the known Gc -> Ga converters would go a long way to completing a proof.

No, not me - but thanks for the congrats :) . I'm using the technique and scripts developed by Paul Tooke and EricG to search non-totalistic rules with gfind. Details in the Adapting gfind thread.

Ah I see! It's pretty cool to see spaceships fly in such an unexplored rule. Everything stablilizes fairly quickly so I didn't expect to see those kind of engineered objects. Congrats anyway!

I'm attempting to make sense of the precise motivation behind X-Rule and its "precedessor" (alphabetic ordering of transition environments is terrible for this!), but it's apparent that this is, in terms of its grown type, a more heavily "de-totalized" version of the SansDomino rule class. The small glider and small spaceship, in particular, are exactly those as also appear in SD-B2/S14.

X-Rule, Golly <--> DDLab

Post by AndyWuensche » November 20th, 2015, 1:17 pm

Hello wildmyron and X-Rule (precursor) aficionados!
I'm the co-author with jmgomez of the X-Rule paper (http://scirate.com/arxiv/1504.01434) which was mainly researched with my program DDLab (http://www.ddlab.org) of which I'm the author.
I've added a function in DDLab to save a DDLab pattern in Golly's format, and also to load a Golly pattern script into DDLab.
I did this because I wanted to see the patterns posted on the forum actually running, especially glider-guns for x-rule-pre, fantastic results! loading the pattern scripts into DDLab was the only way because Golly itself unfortunately refuses to install on my laptop running Ubuntu 11.10.
Although not as critical because any birth/survival Life-like rule can be set in DDLab, it would be nice to also translate rules between DDLab and Golly because there are 1000's of interesting rules that were sampled in the search that finally yielded x-rule-pre and the x-rule. I think I understand the @TABLE notation (what does "var" mean?), but I don't understand the script, B2eic3ic4rnj5ink/S12aen3c4qiyne5re6aei8 for the x-rule-pre. B=birth, S=survival, a to h is noted, but what do i,j,k,m,n,q,r,y stand for? and 8 at the the end?

My thoughts precisely. Hopefully I've managed to interpret the rule correctly - if so, the the X-rule precursor in Alan Hensel's notation is B2eic3ic4rnj5ink/S12aen3c4qiyne5re6aei8. Let's call it x-rule-pre for short. Here's a ruletable:

Code: Select all

@RULE x-rule-pre
This rule is B2eic3ic4rnj5ink_S12aen3c4qiyne5re6aei8
It is an isotropic 'precursor' rule to a non-isotropic rule known as x-rule which has been shown to support logic universality by J.M. Gomez-Soto and A. Wuensche.

** NOTE ** This rule-table was incorrectly posted as the precursor to the x-rule. In fact it is very similar but the actual precursor rule additionally has S2i but not S3c.

[1] Gomez-Soto,JM., and A.Wuensche,“The X-rule: universal computation in a
non-isotropic Life-like Cellular Automaton”

*** File autogenerated by saverule. ***

This is a two state, isotropic, non-totalistic rule on the Moore neighbourhood.
The notation used to define the rule was originally proposed by Alan Hensel.
See http://www.ibiblio.org/lifepatterns/neighbors2.html for details.

Correction: This rule-table was incorrectly posted as the precursor to the x-rule. In fact it is very similar but the actual precursor rule additionally has S2i but not S3c. See the next page for the correct rule table.

A lot of the simple patterns which don't rely on the non-isotropy of X-rule are of course common between the two rules. E.g. the orthogonal glider Gc and three tagalong's posted by danieldb (E/W as well as N/S), the diagonal glider Ga and extensions, the p2 and p6 oscillators, the reflector based oscillators and presumably many others.

Welcome to the forums Andy!
AndyWuensche wrote:... Golly itself unfortunately refuses to install on my laptop running Ubuntu 11.10.
That is surprising to hear -- I know a number of people who use Golly on Ubuntu. What error message(s) are you getting? Are you downloading the appropriate binary distribution that matches your 32/64-bit system?

At our sf download page (https://sourceforge.net/projects/golly/ ... golly-2.7/) there are 2 possible files for Linux systems:

golly-2.7-gtk64.tar.gz -- 64-bit version
golly-2.7-gtk.tar.gz -- 32-bit version

Or if you want to build Golly from source code, download golly-2.7-src.tar.gz and follow the instructions in docs/Build.html.

Hi Andrew
thanks -- have this version of Golly working on Ubuntu 11.10, and learning how to use it.
(problem before was -- sudo apt-get install golly -- gave multiple error messages)

AndyWuensche wrote: I think I understand the @TABLE notation (what does "var" mean?), but I don't understand the script, B2eic3ic4rnj5ink/S12aen3c4qiyne5re6aei8 for the x-rule-pre. B=birth, S=survival, a to h is noted, but what do i,j,k,m,n,q,r,y stand for? and 8 at the the end?
There's a difference between a through h in the ruletable and the letters in the notation. "var" is a variable declaration, in this case the variables are allowed to be any either ON or OFF and are used in the final line to mean
Any ON cell with any possible neighborhood dies.
All survival consitions are listed above that line, so those take precedence, and the final line cleans up everything that shouldn't survive.
Now, the letters in Hensel's rule notation represent different neighborhood sets. For example, B2eic means
Birth on 2 neighbors if those neighbors are arranged in configurations 2e, 2i, or 2c.
The solitary 8 is there because there is only one possible way to have 8 ON neighbors out of 8 neighbors.

P16 Ga backrake:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 13, rule = B2eic3ic4rnj5ink/S12aein4qiyne5re6aei8
4bobo$7bo$4bobo$2bo$2bo$4bobo$7bo$bo2bobo$obo$obo$bo2bobo$7bo$4bobo!
I think this one is smaller than the other known ones.
EDIT: p6

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 7, rule = B2cei3ci4jnr5ikn/S12aen3c4einqy5er6aei8
2o2b2o$o4bo2$b3o2$o4bo$2o2b2o!
EDIT2: a potential c/3

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B2cei3ci4jnr5ikn/S12aen3c4einqy5er6aei8
bo$2o$bo2$2b3o2$bo$2o$bo!
probably useless.
EDIT3: a better one

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 5, rule = B2cei3ci4jnr5ikn/S12aen3c4einqy5er6aei8
3b2o$5bo$3o2bo$5bo$3b2o!
Any sufficiently advanced software is indistinguishable from malice.
