Re: Some questions
I meant mild swearing like this: Doesn't strike me as particularly mild to begin with, to be honest. Also, if you apply Dave's "Scientific American" test, you'll find that the answer quite clearly is "do avoid that". (In fact, if you have to ask yourself whether something is acceptable or not, it's...

Re: John Horton Conway
You've probably heard of (or seen) today's New York Times sunday frontpage -- if not, here it is --; Conway made the list too. See if you can find him. And read about all the others too, because behind each name is a human being who was loved and is now lost.

Re: John Horton Conway
Tragic indeed, and an irreperable loss; Conway was, IMO, one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. My condolences to everyone who was close to him.

Re: Updating website
(Apologies for double-posting---) Sorry for not responding to this yet -- all of these problems are caused by some sort of internal inconsistency in the MediaWiki database, but I'm not sure what yet or how to fix it. Some page or category in the database that one table thinks exists, but another doe...

Re: Richard K. Guy, 1916-2020
That's a real shame. 103 is a ripe old age (I hope I'll live that long!), but death is always a sad event, even so. My thoughts are with his friends and family. EDIT: we now have a black ribbon on the LifeWiki to mourn his passing. (This can easily disabled, and reenabled later in case someone else ...

Re: Life Lexicon update -- now Release 29, 2 July 2018
I've been keeping the latest no-word-wrap text edition of the Life Lexicon on Google Drive, shared so far with David Bell and Apple Bottom since they contributed a lot of new wording and various useful fixes to Release 29. It's probably high time to join the modern age, and make the current To Be D...

Re: Massive spam attacks on the wiki (and forums?)
From my experience on other forums, SEO spambots will often sign up accounts on wikis only to fill their user page with gambling site links. I don't see how this will benefit anyone other than you and spammers, although the distinction is a bit blurry at this point. Coming out of the woodwork for a...

Please, post in the right thread. There's no need to ping everyone who's subscribed to this one, on the assumption that the only new posts will be for interesting new objects. Basic questions don't belong here.Hdjensofjfnen wrote:Sorry, can anyone explain the difference between C1 and G1?

Re: Catagolue browser extension
The extension appears to work well in Firefox. The only incorrect behaviour I have seen is the sample soups are labelled as "C1 soup No. ?/? (Soup, Haul)" in place of "C1 soup No. 1/200 (Soup, Haul)" (for example). I don't know if the Opera extension behaves the same now that Catagolue categorises ...

Re: Catagolue Oddities
Yeah, a few of the oldest yls have apgcodes corresponding to their dates of discovery; I presume this was before apgsearch had a proper way of describing the parameters of yls like it does now. Actually, as I recall it these names are due to the patterns originally being classified as zz_LINEAR; Ca...

Since "soups" isn't a unit but rather a semantic annotation, wouldn't search speed just be measured in hertz, though?Hdjensofjfnen wrote:Let's coin a new SI unit: "spHz", perhaps.

I'm also seeing a new blip on the proverbial radar with 4.87-ll2.1.12: soups in B2k37/S1e2an3-k6n78 die out completely without leaving any debris behind. (I did run 'make clean' this time; didn't fiddle with the compiler flags yet, but since it worked fine in 4.86-ll2.1.11 I reckon this may be due t...

I know the 1-occurrence objects are at the bottom, but some of the still lives have occured 200 times in C1 but some have only occured 40 or so in C1.
